Systems The end of internetradio??

Everyone who has a broadband connection has listened to internetradio. But the good tunes of thousands free internetstations seem to be silenced soon.
Quote:
businessweek :
On Feb. 20, the Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP), a body appointed by the U.S. Copyright Office, ruled that under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), Internet radio stations must pay the record labels a fee of 0.14 cents per song, per listener. Traditional radio stations would pay 0.07 cents per song, per listener. Worst of all, the stations will owe back royalties from October, 1998.
This means the end for almost all (ligit) internetstations. The current and past revenue is just not enough to pay all these royalties.

Back to the pirate radio stations era again??

That's not right! Why should Internet radio pay double the amount of what a normal station pays!?

Boo!

Many or most of the following webcasters — at least, of the U.S.-based ones — are at risk of being bankrupted or shutting down on or about May 21, 2002, if the U.S. Copyright Office sets royalty rates as recommended by its recent CARP panel of arbitrators -- rates that are effectively more than 200% of revenues for most webcasters. (In other words, enjoy these stations while you can!)

Well there are atleast ten in the list I listen too. Probably have to find new non-US based station that will be uneffected by US-law.

That's absolutely ridiculous! A woman at my work was asking me about getting her netradio working again and just saw that it was dumped altogether. Now I see why I guess. What a load o poop!
