Should I be forced to pay it back?

I started a job being a lab assistant in a computer lab at my school. They screwed up my paycheck bigtime. I get paid biweekly. My pay is supposed to be $6.50/hour but somehow it was there for $35.00/hour. I cought it after the second check (a month later) and I told them. Am I required to pay them back all of that money or is there a way that I can keep it becasue it is their mistake?

No. You'll have to give it back.

LOL! Come on. Your telling us you went a whole month not knowing you got a $28.50 per hour raise? How many hours you get a week?

I would ask if I could pay it back in installments! I don't think they have to oblige you on this, but most companies will allow installments so that you aren't overly financially burdened.

Harder

If you accidentally gave a restaurant a $50 instead of $20 for dinner that was $14.95, should they be allowed to keep the extra $30? Didn't think so...

Hmmm, well as I would say to my son..

You mean you got your pay check and it was for oh,,, say 9 hours of work. You looked at a check that should have been about 58 bucks (and that is what you were expecting) and you see a check for 315.00.... And didn't notice?? Of course you did, so..

Tell them the truth. That you blew it. That when you saw that check you just lost it and went crazy for a short time. You pretended it was magic money from heaven... You were wrong. Ask them to forgive you. Hope you don't get fired, and try to work something out for paying them back.

Im a bit suprised you went a whole month 'knowing' you were overpaid grossly and kept your mouth shut. and happens again, by all rights the money should be paid back. Honesty will go a long ways with your bosses if you catch errors off the bat and request for the proper amounts.

Just IMO. Time to pay it back. Sorry.
