someone with a chemistry degree is a hot commodity. not only for industry, but even more so for graduate level work (masters or Ph.D.) I know this because I'm about to graduate in about 3 weeks (yeeehhaawww!!) and just spent this entire semester being flown from school to school so that I could visit and decide if I wanted to go there. The schools paid for everything... flights, meals, transportation. and I wasn't staying at motel 8's!
anyway, chemistry will always have more staying power then a lot of jobs because... well, truthfully, not a whole lot of people like doing it, and not a whole lot of people are even good at doing it. sure, there will be lulls (as expected), but as chem is a central science, it's here to stay, and is being used more and more throughout industry.
perhaps you could do what I intend to do.... I suggest you do a little research into the field of molecular electronics or moletronics. That may be something that intrests you.
good luck
