had a quake this morning
Plattsburgh, NY. My dad said he felt it over here @ 6:50am for 20sec or so, shaking pipes, windows and plates.....of course I was asleep http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/04/20/new...ors/index.html
wow: Quote:
The strongest earthquakes recorded in the continental United States occurred in eastern Missouri near the border with Kentucky and Tennessee, not out West. During the winter of 1811-1812, a series of three earthquakes, with estimated magnitudes of 8.4 to 8.7, occurred near New Madrid, Missouri.
The shocks were so strong that they changed the course of the Mississippi River, church bells rang in Washington D.C. and Boston, and observers reported that the land distorted into visible rolling waves.[

I was in North Bay, Ontario for Y2k New years.. woke up at 4am, and felt everything shaking... they had a small earthquake way up there! Not a good thing to feel when the world is supposed to end anyways LOL
I didn't believe that story at all, but when you get into an earthquake a few hours after the turn to y2k ya get a little suspicious
Hope they're ok up there, do you know what the magnitude of the earthquake was up there wart?

I was asleep too but they said it was equvelant to about 2.4 here. Didn't notice it myself. Guess my mother was right when she told me I could sleep through an earthquake |

I heard 5.4-5.5 also? That sounds high though...but I dunno the damage effects of different quake magnitudes...this one didn't see horrible, although as you can see, roads collapsed and I heard chimneys toppled....nobody dead.

The one that goes through Missouri has been inactive for the past 200 years. If it were to let go, scientists believe it will be the worst ever recorded quake in history.
The largest quake ever in the US happened in Alaska. 1964. It was 9.2 on the Richter scale. This one is also the second largest ever recorded in the world.
They always talk about the San Andreas fault in CA. But that's because it is so active.

Interesting to know that, Mechdood. Quote: |
There were few deaths or damage because the surrounding area was mostly undeveloped at the time.
| That's what I'm afraid of....if it happened now, there would be many, many deaths.
