problems in Afghanistan

source:
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/020418/6/luzb.html

Accidents involving the U.S. military in Afghanistan:

- Oct. 16 and Oct. 26, 2001: U.S. forces bomb Red Cross buildings in Kabul. The military says the Red Cross didn't provide the co-ordinates of the building before the first strike, so the military hadn't crossed it off as a potential target. Officials are still investigating why it was bombed the second time.

- Nov. 11: A UN convoy was damaged by U.S. air strikes. The military says the strikes were aimed at closing a road and the convoy was damaged by debris. UN officials had also not informed U.S. forces the convoy was travelling that day. No one was hurt.

- Nov. 26: An F-18 dropped a bomb during the prison riot at Mazar-e-Sharif, injuring five U.S. soldiers. The military says there were "procedural errors" in transmitting the target co-ordinates to the plane.

- Nov. 28: U.S. helicopters attacked a ground force of navy troops. No one was injured. The military changed some of its communications procedures after the incident.

- Dec. 5: A B-52 dropped a bomb on U.S. and Afghan forces near Kandahar, killing three Americans and at least seven Afghans, and slightly wounding Afghan leader Hamid Karzai. The military says the investigation isn't complete, but officials have said there were errors in transmitting target co-ordinates to the B-52.

- Dec. 22: U.S. aircraft struck a convoy near Khost, killing dozens of Afghans. Some Afghans say the convoy was carrying tribal leaders to the inauguration of Karzai in Kabul. Senior U.S. military commanders insist it was a legitimate target.

- Jan. 23, 2002: U.S. forces raided two compounds near Hazar Qadam. The military says the people in the compounds - who were neither Taliban nor al-Qaida - opened fire on the U.S. forces. The Americans returned fire, killing 16. Several Afghans who were captured also said they were mistreated by the Americans; the U.S. military denied any unnecessary force was used.

- March 2: An AC-130 taking part in Operation Anaconda may have mistakenly attacked a convoy of U.S. and Afghan forces, killing one U.S. soldier. The military said the matter is still under investigation.

- March 6: Coalition forces attacked a suspected al-Qaida leadership target near Shikin, Afghanistan. Fourteen were killed, including three women and three children. The matter is under investigation.

- April 17: A U.S. Air National Guard F-16 drops at least one laser-guided bomb on Canadian forces. The Canadian Defense Department said four Canadians were killed and eight injured.

War is ugly - and it's not exact. But, the US military has certainly made tremendous strides.

When you're dealing with live ordinance, and thousands of sorties each and every day - things happen, sometimes tragic mistakes, there is no reset button.

My condolences to those brave Canadian soldiers, and to the F16 pilot, who will live with it forever.

Chooco,

And those listed are at least a thousand time fewer than any war before Desert Storm, not to mention they were accidents unlike the horrible cruelty that the Taliban and Al Queda reigned upon the Afghan people in a similar 6 months period.

Anytime there is a war, as sad as it may seem, there will be friendly casualties. Murphey's Law is always riding on your back. While precision munitions are almost guaranteed not to go astray, things can and will go wrong on the ground for the ground pounders. The days of dropping retarded bombs are fading away, but they will never go totally away.

Our Ordanancemen that are on the Carrier Decks are working their arses off. Most of you probably can't fathom what they are going through. On a daily basis they are loading 1000 lb. bombs by hand. Literally. 8 guys man handle them up to the bomb racks.

Wart,

Chooco's point is to demean or otherwise dispell honor on our armed forces. He lives to needle people and make irrelevent points to insite ire. He is a little man.

Check your grammar. Find one operation that did not have coordination problems. These are so few and minor they are a testament to how far command and control has evolved from previous conflicts. BTW, I know I have a far closer perspective than you could ever imagine.

Club,

I see no question posed by Chooco, just horribly lopsided instances. For his data to be valid it would need to be complete, it seems he has totally forgotten that the Taliban was overthrown in under 60 days, with the most minimal of casualities. This was accomplished by employing asymetric warfare, not providing the enemy a target they could fight, but rather attacking them in a way that minimized civilian deaths and completed the objective. Compare that to wars fought by every other nation in the world and the death toll for everyone would have been higher with less effectiveness.
