Outdoors Drunk Driving Kills

This weekend there is a prom coming up in my school. Will I go? No, I'm still a junior, and I'm still lonely (no g/f). On average, in the U.S., a teen is killed every 15 minutes because of a drunk driver.

Our school today had a very dramatic representation of the accident and the aftermath. Every two years, our district and the city organize this event. They close down the street in front of the school, put 2 cars that have been crushed in a previous accident and put 4 students in them. The whole junior and senior class watches as the police come with sirens, then the ambulance, the fire trucks, and soon the funeral car arrives.

Also throughout the day, every fifteen minutes a bell rings in our school, and a student is chosen to be taken out of the class. THe students don't come back to class. They spend the whole day with other students who were chosen, and the night they spend at a motel away from their homes.

Obituaries are written up for them and hanged around the school.

It is a very powerful event in my oppinion

I think that is one of the better approches that I have seen. Here in germany there is normally a car that was in a high speed accident on the autobahn in front of the military post... it amazes me when I see a VAN that is crushed... makes me wonder what the drivers were thinking/doing.

Where exactly is your school?

out here in BC we have had an outbreak of teens killed in car accidents due speeding and drinking. It's been a very sad and scary couple of months. I think the schools and kids out here in BC would learn a lot from a demonstration like that.

I think that is a wonderful way to get the message across, and one that I will be speaking to the schools in my area, not to mention my Alma Mater, and putting forth the suggestion that this be implemented there...............

Here's what they did in my high school. (This is 7 years ago already):

1. Crushed car on front lawn
2. Speaker that had been a passenger in a crash where the driver was drunk. He lost three friends that day and had a glass eye which he removed during the presentation (yuck)
3. Took a group of kids had them dress in black, paint there faces white and walk around with R.I.P signs all day. Creepy looking

Pretty good way to get a point accross IMO

All we got to see was the movie"Red Asphalt". It's been so long I can't remember if it was about speeding or drinking and driving.

I wonder if they've toned those driver's ed. movies down since I was in school. We got to see stiff, charred bodies pulled from a burnt pickup truck. People with brains splattered out. Some guy impaled on the steering column.

They were really gruesome. Some of the girls in the class bailed out right away.
