Yes and NO, I had this problem recently, Techically the purchaser needs to sign the money order so in the event something later happens they can track the number on the money order later from the reciept of the money order the purchaser holds.
You could sign it yourself and put it in the bank however some banks or stores will ask for the receipt of the cashiers check.
I myself sent the money orders back to the purcahser by certified mail and requested them returned within 5 business days upon reciept of the letter. I did this per lawyers suggestion, this was a quite a bit of money in my situation as i had been having trouble getting my money back from the ex landlords. took a while but did get it finally.

EDIT: if its just a small amount I don't think it will hurt to sign them youself and use it at the gas station provided it was not Made Out: to your name, if its entirely blank then I don't see why you can't. But if your names on it already, then it might pose another problem.
