What is our privacy worth?

I posted this link in "Quote of the Day", but I thought it deserved it's own thread.

Assault on Privacy

What protection does our privacy deserve?
Isn't an invasion of our privacy a violation of our civil rights to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness?
What constitutes such an invasion?

Junk mail?
An unsollicited fax?
Telemarketing?

Evidently, at least one judge thinks we have too much privacy.

Okay here is my view on it. Its basically the same as him

I'm not going to just "get used to it"

But with computer prices being lowered everyday and mom and pops internet services are pretty cheap. So everyone and there mom has computers. We have so many people who don't know what spyware is, and a lot don't care if it’s out there. Unlike me its a constant fight to get it away from me. don't get me wrong, I have nothing to hide but for some person to advertise, spam me, or solicited with XXX, work at home, and get your degree emails is outrageous.

to comment the judge about we have to much privacy I would spit in his face. These people who feel we should not have privacy should really get out of America. How about instead of brick walls, we make our house out of glass? That way we could have everyone see what we are doing. Or how about we start letting everyone listening and reading our emails. Our opening our boxes or how about letting the police just randomly searching our houses? There’s reason why we have doors, locks and walls. To have something to yourself and no one else. Its called privacy. Lets see it if the judge likes it if we watch it when he’s taking a shower (scary example I know, buts all I could come up with right now )

this is an invasion of out privacy and its harassment in my eyes. There is not thirty seconds I can't sit on AIM or ICQ and get spammed by some bot asking me to join some f@cking porn site. Now I have to limit my buddy list to only people I have on my list. I shouldn't have to do that. But I do.

A lot of people don't understand that spyware opens up backdoors. Any programs that you install and you have an internet connection could open a back door and I wish someone would ban gator and all that comet cursor crap! This bs with kaaza and the hidden network really took the cake and I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the last we see an hear of this. Someone needs to stop this.

End of rant.

Systems

It's a sad fact that many folks open themselves up to privacy violations in ways they never consider. Many supermarkets and drugstores have "Customer courtesy cards" which give buyers instant rebates and discounts after they're done X amount of shopping. It also tracks what they buy and when. Perfect info for advertisers. Your credit card is the biggest "window in the brick wall" to paraphrase GroundZero3, especially if you do a lot of buying online.

I've created and maintain several free email addresses on Yahoo and Hotmail to use when I wish to download freeware or when I shop online. That way I get any spam generated by that download or purchase at the free accounts, not in my main email account. When a free account starts to get overwhelmed with spam, I close it out and open a new one.

Still, there's only so much you can do to prevent loss of privacy. I don't know if more gov't control is the answer, but it's a sure bet that the average American consumer will continue to give away private info if it will "save them a buck or two."

Hmmm, I wonder if 1-800-Collect gathers data on numbers called so they can call that number later to offer long distance service?

Never give your correct name My Kroger card has me listed as " Alfred E. Neuman", etc with places like Radio Shack. Esspecially returning merchandise and yuo have to fill out a form to get your money. Have a few anonyamous E mail addresses. No online credit card buying or hooking them up to my checking account.
Money orders and bank drafts for payment. Keep your numbers to your self. You never know if the info you give will come back to haunt you in the future.
