Rules of the server room.

We got an email today, from one of our guys at the umm errr "Corporate office" (we're only 25 people lol, we share space with an organization)

They were kinda funny thought I'd share them

1. I will clean up after myself
2. I will not use the computer room as my personal computer junkyard or any other kind of junkyard
3. I will not leave computers with their covers open all over the computer room
4. I will not leave any non-operation/disconnected computers in the computer room
5. I will not leave any computers not belonging to the computer room in the computer room
6. I will not leave cables lying around in the computer room
7. I will not stack things behind the computer racks
8. I will not randomly throw cables in the cabinet of the computer room
9. I will roll the cables up neatly, put a twist tie on them, and put them in their proper box in the cabinet.
10. I will not tie-warp the ever the living hell out of cables sitting on the shelf specially the fiber cables
11. I will not put masking tape on cables that leaves skicky goo all over the cable
12. I will not put bad/broken cables back in the cabinet.
13. I will not do random and adhoc patching of cables between the patch panel and the switches/hubs
14. I will not run cables on the floor
15. I will not string cables across the room that will be in the way
16. I will not use a 14 ft cable where only a 3 ft cable is needed and leave the slack sitting on the floor to get all tangled up
17. I will not run NetCentrics cables through NCI racks and vice versa.
18. I will not stack computers or any other devices/materials on top of the racks just because I have run out of any other place in the computer room to throw them or for any other reason.
19. I will not use the computer room as a storage room for boxes and computers.
20. I will not unpack boxes and throw boxes/packing materials all over the computer room
21. I will not leave soda cans lying around in the computer room
22. I will not throw half empty soda cans in the trash bins of the computer room. Idealy I would endure the severe discomfort of walking 25 feet to the kitchen and throw the can in the recycling bin
23. I will promptly return any tools borrowed from engineering as soon as I'm done using them
24. I will not leave anything in the computer room that does not belong there
25. I will not leave any monitors or lights running in the computer room at the end of the day
26. I will close the door shut if I'm the last person to leave for the day
27. I will keep the door closed when there is no one in the room
28. I will follow all the above rules without exception

Yeh pretty funny but needed in some places...

29. I will not disconnect powercables by tripping on them while trying to plug in the new UPS sending the main fileserver into darkness.

Then again, that could have been avoided if the other rules had been followed...

30. Don't plug microwave oven into the same circuit/breaker as server and nuke your food on high during peak hours....unless you want to test your UPS (ours works).

As data/lan engineer, I visit many different customers, from the little guy to the large multi-national conglomerates, and if those rules were obeyed my life would be so much easier.

Only today, I visited a small branch of a BIG bank, not much kit, cisco2610, cat, 64K Kilostream. All this in a wall mount rack at 6ft off the floor, wide desk in front and no key!!

So

31 Always know where the cabinet keys are.

I too have stepped on a power cable and turned off a customers HDD, you know, one of the old ones (several 12" platters).

actually scotch tape sometimes leaves a mess too if its not the good stuff.
Or if its just been there for awhile in a warm room (such as a server room)

masking tape doesn't leave a mess though.....however, it does get stuck on real hard when you leave it on for about 10 years.

this low budget cabinet in my house had masking tape since it was purchased.... it's like 25 years old and the tape just won't come off lol
