I think I get a pretty good deal from Sitehosting.net...a little less than $50.00 per year...and I have yet to hear of my site ever being unaccessable!

Do you have a legitamate setup or are you running this out of your house for fun? The offer sounds great. I use Earthlink ($20.00 a month) for hosting and dont get nearly that much storage or MySQL, but I also know that they will be around tomorrow. And their support has been top notch.

shahani -> Yup, 24/7/365. 99.9%

Knothead -> Sitehosting is able to offer you that great deal through a practice called overselling... Meaning, they offer you a great deal - assuming you won't use it all. Think of it this way.. They have a 4000 sq. ft. house of which they are renting rooms out of. Assuming that you won't use all of your square footage, they promise 10 people 1000 sq. ft. It's overall considered shoddy business practice, which WILL eventually catch up to them if they aren't careful. Think of it this way. If your host has an okay deal, they can get their bandwidth for about $2.50 a gigabyte. If they have a GREAT deal, they can MAYBE get it for $1.50. Of course, there are exceptions here and there.

jman01pa;

The following server is co-located in a high grade data center;

Pentium III 1.6Ghz
512MB SDRAM
60GB HDD
Win2K Server

As for support, well - I guess that depends on your definitions of excellent, good and bad.

I was talking about this to a tech guy from Freeservers.com
He seems to think that there is lots of room for more business and personal hosting.
One thing is don't have your prices too low. Compete on quality and service first before you try to compete on price.

I'm not really doing this professionally, but it really does interest me. It may just be something that I take up in the future.

The strange/sad part of it is - is that there are sooo many (hundreds, if not thousands) of startup hosts, mostly by people who have absolutely no clue. All pretty much offering the same thing. Yet, I don't know what this means - but I can think of 50 logical and efficient ways to gain clients quickly and easily, while maintaining a quality, reputable service. A trait that many lack, unfortunately. And something, suprisingly enough, that they don't even really understand. That's one reason why I think I'd do well. I'd thrive on providing excellency in terms of service to my clients.
