My Drain is plugged. :(

Ah my son the budding chief.. He burned a pan full of rice.
Turned on the disposal and started stuffing it in ... a few moments later I hear, "Mom the drain is plugged!"
I sent him to the store for a plunger, but nope it's not working.

It's cheesy pvc pipe for the drain (not well configured) and I'm wondering if I should try another plunger (a really big one) or pour in stuff, or just call a plumber ? I live in a rental, but I'll have to pay for anything that gets done to fix it..

Hi, Surreal! Here's what's up: If you go outside, directly in front of where the sink is, you'll see a pipe protruding from the wall, approx. 1-1/2" diameter, with a plug in it. Using an adjustable wrench (Channel locks will do in a pinch) remove the plug.
Take a garden hose, and jam it in there about a foot. Turn the hose on, and try to keep the water from escaping (you're goona get wet, ) run it full blast for a minute.
Sometimes this will dislodge the blockage.
If it doesn't, you'll have to rent a "snake", and if that happens, post back, I'll give ya instructions (it's not difficult)

Hmmm, I think I'm still too sick.. For a snake, but I will go check out the thing outside.

Don't you know any magic words or anything???

Yes, I do...

"Patrick! I need you to unplug the drain!"

Can't ya just use some sort of thing to pour down the drain?
Draino?
Of course, I'm the girl who overflowed her toilet last year by trying to "repair" it herself!

Knothead, do they really put the cleanouts outside in the wall like that where you live? I bet that is just plain nasty looking.

Doh! Nothing there Knot!

OK, I'm going to try an industrial strength plunger and then break down and call a plumber if that doesn't work.

Off to the hardware store.

Make sure you use the plunger correctly.
There is a right way and a wrong way to use a plunger. (I learned that from the plumber who came to fix my mess.)

What, you mean you don't have them?? Where do you live? That's mighty curious....out here (California) it's just part of the building code, almost 80 years now...

And NO!! Do NOT use that "Liquid Plumber" jazz! This is a simple cleanout, and that stuff burns like hellfire when you get it on your hands! OW OW OWOWOWOWOWOW!!!
