looking at techimo... it's a cute little community and all but some of the stuff costs a crap load of money to keep up
this forum cost $150 USD i believe, keeping a real domain name (where you can have extentions on the url) cost money, having a seemingly fast host like techimo does costs money too
there's only that crucial memory thing and that changing banner in the forums area that i can see... do those little banners actually make that much money?
ScottW lives entirely off of this site, however dont forget that he also licenses PhotoPost which he designed (with the help of Mark?)
Not sure if this is Mark's full time job or not, but it is for Scott.
Websites certainly do not make the income necessary to keep them up, tis why so many are going under Advertising just doesn't pay like it used to

Vass has pretty much answered your questions and I agree with what is has said. It takes alot of memebership to make ads pay off due to the amount that the ad companies now pay webmasters for hosting their ads some are commission only..others are on a per click thru and some are per view.
The Forum Software is actually 165.00 USD to own (with 1 year of free updates and then 30 a year there after) or 80 bucks a year to "lease". A good connection will truthfully run in the 100 bucks a month and up depending on how much dedicatated bandwidth and or data transfer you need/want. I know that TechIMO goes thru about 2gig a day bandwidth just to serve the site's pages. then you can add ontop of that the file transfers and game demo's ect. so it adds up quick!
What Scott needs to think about, and I told him when we spoke last month, is to get companies to pay in some way for the incredible amount of technical talent/experience in the collective membership pool.
I'd told him I would try and design a model to demonstarte that its possible to generate multiple revenue streams leveraging the inherent technical strength and pool of talent here.
I have to get back to SW on this, and will do so once I get a job lined up 'cause thats taking all my time right now.

do you mean make a development team of the techimo members? like make perl scripts, websites and graphic designs or something? sounds cool!
Really, we are our own customers... This forum acts to give courage to newbies and oldbies to try new stuff, because if you trip on yourself you have people to help you sort it out.
