Rally Planned to Keep Full Service Gas Stations
Quote: |
Two New Jersey Assemblymen will join with senior citizens from throughout the Garden State this afternoon for a rally at the Statehouse in Trenton. State Assemblymen Matt Ahearn and Jeff Van Drew say they will announce legislation at the rally to strengthen the state's full-service gasoline stations. There's been talk recently in New Jersey about moving the state's gasoline stations to self-serve. New Jersey is one of only two states in the country that doesn't have self-service gasoline.
| Only in NJ do people rally to keep a 40-year-old tradition of letting "professional gas station attendants" pump our gas, when everybody else does it themselves. I wasn't aware of this but apparently senior citizens are imprisoned in gas stations all over the country because they can't get anyone to pump their gas!

Yeah, here there are a few "Full-Service" stations, they charge 15cents a gallon more and you have to wait to get into the pump area ..
Mostly old ladies and Rich-Bishes who are too good/lazy to pump their own fuel.
I personally like the Full Service for the old folks who are not able to check their oil, tires, transmission fluid, Power steering, washer, engine coolant, brake fluid.
I saw an old lady at the local cheap-O gas station waiting to air a tire. I volunteered to do it as I was already dirty from working.
Upon looking at her tires and seeing all 4 were low(Less than 15 pounds, all !) I filled them and she offered me MONEY. Aghast as I was I managed a polite Thank You and took her purse ' ' J/K

I am for the 'senior service' stations. My mother had nearly crippling arthitis and needed that kindness. And so do many others.
I have looked and found dozens of stations here that will pump the gas for customers that need the help. Without charging extra.
As for the ones that won't... I can only say that several have changed owners since I noticed...

Seriously through Ontario in the towns, its harder to find a self service station than it is a full service station
(at least in teh parts I've been!)

It's ages since I've been to an attended pump!! They're few and far between here & if you do find one, there won't be a differential charge (we pay so much allready that people would tell them where to stick the nozzle )
Having said that, if you did have trouble using the pump due to age or disability, I'm sure someone would help out without any fuss!

| Yeah, Doc, that would be great! But there aren't any gas stations who do that. "Full serve" = some guy who can't speak English pumps your gas. But I would never let any of them look under MY hood! (If you'll recall, a few of the 9/11 terrorists worked in NJ gas stations.)

If a gas station is full service only, then that station doesn't have to pay for the costly insurance that comes with a self service gas station. Thus, you can pay someone min. wage to pump the gas and the savings get passed on to the consumer.

Or, being more realistic, not bother passing the savings onto the consumer & make more profit
EDIT: OOI, I'd have thought that the insurance is high with the 'served' stations, due to the exposure of staff to fuel vapour & the various 'covering a$$' implications of this.... but then I guess you have to offset the likelihood of some muppet customer spilling fuel every where, driving off with the hose still attached to the car...

Anyone know why gas station employees in Oregon are required to pump your fuel? Did they go to some enviro-fume reduction training school that makes them the only ones qualified to pump your gas? I trust no-one.... Don't want a cross-threaded gas-cap. |
