What the heck is the "cow" and "proteins"

I have heard these terms on these forums. For example:

"This cow is chewing a cud the size Cleveland!"

"What's the target protein, and on what system?

I have no idea what they mean..................

Calling your PCs "cows" comes from the RC5 distributed computing project in which the client software had a cow for the icon. I think the client might have had cow sounds too but I’m not sure.

A bump's as a good as wink.

Figure sometime we'll hear the tale.
How a city girl rode the wild plains.
Came to be known, in the west.
As the "Bovine DeRanger"

YeeHah!

The UD THINK project makes use of the unused CPU cycles of computers all over the internet to analyze proteins for interactions that could eventually lead to the cure for cancer. A cow is a term used to refer to any computer that's part of this, or one of the other Distributed Computing projects. Some of the work units that are sent out are particurally difficult to "digest" so that's where the reference to "chewing a cud the size Cleveland" comes from.

BTW, does anyone know a link to, or can the tell the story of, the origin of the name Ex Mad Cows?

I got the impression it was something to do with a team called Dutch Power Cows, but I could be wrong
