Calling your PCs "cows" comes from the RC5 distributed computing project in which the client software had a cow for the icon. I think the client might have had cow sounds too but I’m not sure.
Right you are Tachyon, it's also came to be a term for any "herd" of computers. Also the Techimo UD Team is call the Ex Mad Cows .. (long story) Or Formerly deranged Bovines .. Or...
The UD THINK project makes use of the unused CPU cycles of computers all over the internet to analyze proteins for interactions that could eventually lead to the cure for cancer. A cow is a term used to refer to any computer that's part of this, or one of the other Distributed Computing projects. Some of the work units that are sent out are particurally difficult to "digest" so that's where the reference to "chewing a cud the size Cleveland" comes from.
