Glad you asked. UD is one of the many Distributed Computing projects that are going on right now. It takes a protein and compares it to different molecules in the hopes of finding a cure for cancer. There are many Teams at TechIMO. Just goto http://www.techimo.com/teams.html for more information.

Cancer, eh? Now THATS ironic: a week ago Monday, my wife had major surgery in Boston Mass for Ovarian Cancer, Type III/C.

Like most of the Distributed Computing projects, UD uses your idle CPU cycles. UD THINK is a project where thousands of computers all over the world analyze protiens for potential interactions that could eventually lead to a cure for cancer.

Check out phenious' post that's at the top of the Distributed Computing forum for more information on the project and how to get started. Feel free to use that forum to ask any additional questions about UD or any of the other DC projects

What is UD?

Well, for some of us, it's a life-consuming passion to get PC's to crunch numbers in the hope that we can assist in finding a cure for cancer, and possibly other diseases. It works by allowing your PC to use power it doesn't normally get to use to work on some specific problems set by scientific researchers at Oxford University.

The real trick is to get as many PC's as you can to join in the fight - the faster the problems are worked out, the more likely a cure will be found.

So our passion is to buy / cobble together / steal (never! ) PC's that we can connect together and keep running UD on. All in the name of research (and fun! ).

That's what UD is, IMO.

The lads gave some urls this is the home page.

They have a forum as well but it is UBB rather than VBB and fairly slow.

You will need to register at either site to get involved.

One PC is all you need to start.

Techimo's Team is the Ex Mad Cows.

The name is due for an upgrade, isnt it blokes?

When they contrive the 'all singing all dancing anime'. [Perhaps]
But I digress.

You'll find another good reason to get online when you are running UD.

My main surfing box is an Athlon Classic 550

I run the UD client full time, I cannot tell it is running at all, ever. It does NOT bog the machine down in the least.

I'm certain this is one of the issues you were wondering about.

Sorry :-( my home PC (Mandrake Linux) is not on the net, *never* will be (security can't get any better than that, eh?). This box is a company box.... wouldn't dream of asking the IT guys; they'd freak out.
