417 to 3: House Strikes Rapidly ! Discovers Unemployment in USA.

WOW !

How long ago was September 11 th ?

How soon doth November draw near ?

Is my memory defective, or was there rising unemployment before the Tragedy of the Twin Towers ?

Ah ! Remember Alan Greenspan before Congressional Committees telling a rapt Congress about how the economic growth rate was too high to continue--so the Fed would make sure it wouldn't continue. Makes sense.

No yellow subtitles, alas, so the Congress nodded--or "nodded".

By January of this year 7.9 million people were unemployed. Yup, da Fed engineered and micromanaged a "soft landing". And 1.9 million have exhausted their Unemployment benefits.

Either that , or Companies and People began to believe it that it would slow down economic growth after about six interest rate hikes and began to cut back on capital investment. Economics is only half Physics--the other half is Psychology.

Today the House voted to extend the 26 week Unemployment Insurance by an additional 13 weeks and allow for additional extensions in hi-unemployment States.

Err...can Greenspan explain that in NewSpeak ? Gee, don't we all benefit when Government tries to manage the Economy, instead of letting the Market do its own thing.

Today aBILL was passed by the House to send this Unemployment measure to the Senate and then to Bush.

Of course most people would prefer to be working than collecting the --what is the $ maximum ?--for being laid-off.

Which would you prefer ?

DOOOG

The max varies by state... I had to collect for about 3 weeks - $125/wk in my state and you have to withhold your own taxes for when you file for that year! (both Fed & State)

I get $298/week ($315 is max) here in WI, but then you have to take out 17% child support and taxes, which leaves me about $200/week to pay bills and buy food. Still looking, but I'm glad that I'll at least have that coming in for a while, til I do find work.

This country has evolved a "two-tiered" economy---the economy which is tracked by the Fed (and Forbes Magazine..), and the economy which is experienced by the average (non-millionaire) guy in the street.

It's hardly surprising that "our" congress is ignorant of this reality...they are completely immune to/removed from it.

We (meaning the average working guy) haven't been represented in the Congress for many years now. This government ceased to be a "Government by the People..." etc. many years ago.

Lobbies and special interests run the Parliament of Whores.

No, I DO NOT love our government! But I guess you figured that out, already...

Hey !

Here in NYS, we only elect da best...yes, Hon. "Hollywood" Hillary.

And when did she announce her Senatorial ambitions ?

At a meeting of The Unity Caucus, which runs two family businesses. One is the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) , which provideds it with both a steady source of involuntary income and tax-exempt status, and the $12 billion plus (not enough, asks for more) budget, Board of Education (BOE).

Why would we vote out of office such exemplary leaders?

And the Prez of the the UFT, she was appointed Elected President for Life. Taxpayers only get to pay for one of her two full-time salaries and pensions as honorary Teacher, they don't get to vote for her in an actual real election.

But then, neither do the UFT Members.

DOOOG

P.S. It is not only taxpayers here who get to pay for the Family -business Unity Caucus' honorary Teachers salaries. 1/4 NYC, 1/2 NYS, 1/4 USA. Yes, Members from the other 49 States, something to smile about when you fill out your Tax Return this year.

P.S. The Unity Caucus is in the market to sell three wholly -owned office buildings in trendy, expensive Park Avenue South at a considerable profit.

Of course, as a Non-profit Organization it fronts the UFT [Teacher's "union"], whose members have no choice under an arrangement with local politicians but to pay "dues" to it. In fact, non-members are also required to pay ..errr"agency fees" to it.

Which means it doesn't have to pay any Capital Gains Tax on the profits from the three office buildings.

The Teacher's, however, are paid about 30 % less than surrounding Counties and have 30 plus children to the classroom as opposed to fifteen in the surroundings.

Anybody ever have to pay a Capital Gains Tax ?
Hmmm..I guess you didn't have the right "family business"

DOOOG

P.S. The actual ratio of Teachers to stidents is also 15 -to 1 in the NYC BOE. Wondering where the other fifteen per class went ? Don't ask it's other Business venture, the BOE. They cannot "count up" how many Teachers they employ, let alone where they are.

Seems like there are three computer systems that cannot communicate with one another. A Chancellor, figured out in public that they must have been designed that way. After he was fired , he returned to CA.

Hmmm...is there a better public school system in CA ?

Congressional Elixir

Yipes ! I am S-h-o-c-k-e-d
Yes, I shoudn't have tried to put a paw into that errant Cd-Rw...Yucks, I didn't know claws were electro-conductive....

Err...Regarding the above , da Inimitable One has already concocted the BD Congressional Elixir--whose recipe was on another Thread.

Briefly stated , it provides for one Member of Congress (both esteemed Houses) to lose thair salary for every Thousand people laid-off that month.

Then they would insist on yellow subtitles for Translation into English for every time the Greenspan spoke.

The jerk in The White House for Eight Years was too busy with Other Activities to bother to interfere with the Economy. This is good.

And the Economy grew.

And Congress sat back in veneration as the Fed tried to "fix" that !

All grist for the mill.

The Democrats say they don't know what's wrong with the country, but they can fix it...

The Republicans say there's NOTHING wrong with this country, but they can fix that, too.
