What does "banned" mean?

Hi all, what does the word banned mean when it is shown under a user name in a thread? I hope this isn't a stupid question, but it seems to me that if that user name was banned, taking the word literally, then the thread wouldn't even be shown in the first place.

It means that that user's account has been banned, they can no longer post here. They can also no longer send e-mails or PM's (which are disabled here at this time) through the forum.

Read the FAQ's for the rules and such here at RR. Note that different forums have different rules.

Forums these days have a number of mods on them to monitor member activities, just to avoid spammers.

But some forum sites don't easily ban an account, they normally suspend it. However, if the spamming activity is just too much. Then, your account will FOREVER be suspended.

clarkmobley is infamous around these parts
In general, being banned means that you or your account is prohibited from accessing a certain interface. Let's take a forum setup for example. You have an account which you use to login on the forum with. When you commit an offense or whatever thing based on the rules of the community, your account could be banned from accessing the site. Be it some number of days or permanently, that would be based on the gravity of what you committed.
