Newegg rant

I just ordered the pioneer 106s/2 from newegg. The picture clearly shows it is a white/offwhite color. The drive I recieved was NOT white or offwhite, it was GREY. WTF??

I called them up, and the CSR said I got what I ordered. I could RMA it, but then I have to pay shipping to ship it back.

I'm probably too cheap to pay return shipping, but I'm still thinking about it.

If I keep it i'll probably want to spray paint it. What kind of paint should i use for the faceplate? Are there any special techniques that I should know ahead of time?

1. choose a sunny day
2. two thin coats works best, because one thick
coat will make drips.
3. tape off all areas you dont wanna get spray on
masking tape is first choice, duct tape is
second choice

I got all the basics down i.e. sand w/ fine grit paper, clean w/ paint thinner, and several thin coats.

do i need some sort of metal primer?

and what about plastic? any special treatment there?

I suggest using vinyl dye(if you can find it in white) instead of paint. It goes on thin, and doesn't build up or peel off like paint does. No primer is required if you use dye.

hehe. Good point.

It's too dark right? What if you just drop it in some beach for a while. (just the detached face plate of course.)

I have painted my CDRW and my DVD drive. It's fun and easy if you don't make these stupid mistakes:

1. Never EVER EVER touch the paint when it's wet - even if you screw up.

2. Use primer. Some spray paints are extremely cohesive. So much that no paint will stick to any angles on the faceplate.

3. Remove all buttons and lightpipes before painting.

4. Sanding is not necessary.

5. Use very light coats.

6. When you think the faceplate and the buttons are dry, wait another 12 hours before touching them.

7. NEVER use paint thinner/solvent on plastic, the plastic will melt.

How to paint the drive:

1. First plug the drive's power in.

2. Push the eject button.

3. While the tray is out, unplug the power.

4. Pop off the end of the tray so that the faceplate will slide off.

5. Pop off the faceplate.

6. Remove buttons and lightpipes.

7. Prime.

8. Paint.

9. Have a beer.

10. Find something to do for the next 24 hours.

11. Put the drive back together.

Only one beer in 24 hours? I don't think I'll be painting any computer parts.
