Blockbuster, DVD and aspect ratio...

Blockbuster is enjoying incredible profits even during our current economic stagnation. Part of the reason is the growth in DVD rentals, the profits from which they DO NOT have to share with the studios. Unfortunately, they have chosen, on a corporate level, to carry only pan and scan versions of movies in their stores. I understand that not everyone owns a big screen TV, and many do not want to give up part of their viewing area to black bars. But I think we should be given the choice! Many DVD's have both choices (double-sided); that's great. So is the brilliant way that "Shrek" was marketed, with TWO discs enclosed with both choices. But many films are being sold in two versions, and Blockheader, er, Ballbuster, er, Blockbuster has chosen ONLY pan and scan. (One recent example was "Cats and Dogs").

Blockbuster employees have been instructed to BS their patrons as to why the W-I-D-E-S-C-R-E-E-N is not available. I urge movie lovers to badger Blockbuster about this policy. Let your voice be heard.

I cannot take credit for the image below. But whoever developed it has hit the nail on the head, IMHO.

what's pan and scan?
edit: oh nevermind, read post wrong
black bars on top/bottom = wide screen

Personally, I'd rather have "regular", cutoffpartofthemovie screen than widescreen....makes watching it on my lil 19" monitor a pain in the a-hole

*edit
I see...every single DVD I own has widescreen only....an option would be great for BOTH sides....some movies, I may feel like watching in widescreen.

Yeah, I second that. With powerdvd I can always take off aspect ratio, but then it looks silly, rather just have it full screen right from the DVD.

Yeah anyways crazyray.....it could've been too costly (i guess) for them to have both. Afterall, the people with big screen tvs is I bet a very, very small percentage of Blockbuster customers.
