There were recently some internal interviews for promotions.
I was one of the people chosen to interview.
They haven't announced who got it yet, but there are rumors floating around that they've decided and who got what.
I heard that I was passed up because, even though I was the best candidate, the other guy was good buddies outside of work with the group he got hired on with.
I am soooo upset. It makes me so angry, and it makes me want to just leave!! I just had to blurt it out though, because it's really getting to me.
And sorry men, but I think a lot of it is because I'm not a GUY. I"m this 22 year old blond female and even when I'm completely professional/serious for some reason they don't want to take me that way.

Hey, that really does suck if the rumor is true. You don't want to get too hot until the promotions are complete cause you may be surprised. The work force can be unfair and it is up to you how you deal with the pressures and treatment. If you are not promoted and your job is still worth it, keep doing a great job and you will be up the ladder in no time.

I know how you feel. I had the same experiance, except instead of it being a male/female thing, its I am only 20. Noone here takes me seriously because they could all be my dad.

Mead you and I are in the same boat. I had my 21st birthday not too long ago. Some people have been working here longer than I have been alive. They dismiss what I say as nonsense. The fact that I might just know what I am talking about is not ever a possibility in their minds.

I think people's issues that cause them to look down on the younger generation is that "older" people grew up with that as well and it now natural for them to do the same. They had to go through the same unfair practices, also in the days of job unsecurity.

My advice is to keep upgrading skills, work hard, and respect your fellow employees. Things will go your way!!

geekgirl: sorry to hear but that is just the way things are. I am not saying that is right... I work in IS Support and my female co-workers have it much harder than me. Not so much as promotions but as in people trusting a female to help fix a problem. I don't agree but I think the majority of people in the world, no one here at techIMO, are pretty narrow minded...
sorry, just my $0.02

p.s. The ironic thing is that most women that I have worked with in the same job as me, they are the cream of the crop!

If you are in IT at all you will find a very obvious glass ceiling in some areas still. I get sick of it after awhile. I also get frustrated with the "you don't look like a computer geek" stuff too.

Discrimination, be it of racial, sexual, old-boys-network, "positive discrimination", or any other origin is utter $hite. I can understand why you're

The difficulty is actually proving that you were discriminated against. You may know it... the whole d@mn world & sundry may know it, but if your manager can tick the little checkboxes in the Ladybird Guide to Management and exonerate themselves (on paper), then you're up $hit Creek without a paddle.

If you dispute it at a tribunal, your superiors are likely to make your life a misery whatever the outcome (unless they are sacked for misconduct ). The only realistic option I can see is to find yourself another job offer in the meantime, dispute it if you have a case tighter than a duck's a$$, then if it falls through, leave.

Unfortunately, you ain't gonna get a decent reference from your current boss if you try to haul them across hot coals! And they know this

Maybe someone has experience of how to tackle these situations without landing themselves in a totally miserable situation @ work???

Before I found out about this job opening, I had planned on leaving to go to school full time again near August. BUT, if I were to have gotten this job, I probably would have stayed in school part-time for a while longer (a half year to a year). Now, I know I still have the full-time school in my outlook, but being here until August makes me cringe.
I just don't want to leave and stick my husband supporting me until August, but I don't want to stay here until August either. Any ideas on what I can do to get out of this place... things to bide time until August?
