Misc How long is eternity?

Many years ago, I forget where, I read an article and eternity was described as this:

'Imagine a globe of solid iron the size of the Earth. Every ten thousand years a sparrow comes along and, just once, brushes the surface with its wing. Once the globe of iron has been totally worn away by this action eternity will still not have finished.'

I've always thought that this is a very apt description of a very long time indeed.

Now, anyone out there like to calculate just how long this globe of iron would take to wear down completely?

"When we've been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing his praise than when we've first begun."

You know the rest.

hmm, eternity... somewhere around the length of time it takes for my dear, sweet, mother-in-law to leave.

Hmmmm.... I would have to be at least a 4th dimentional being in order to measure the length of an object such as eternity!

Serious replies only please!

phenious - well I suppose just ordinary iron, and the brush of a sparrows wing would be pretty weak. You've seen iron manhole (drain) covers in the road which are years old and worn down by the traffic going over them, just imagine how long it would take a sparrows wing brush just to do that!

edit - not you cadetstimp, you were posting as I was replying! -edit

Heh.. ok.. it is a depleted uranium globe
or maybe a solid diamond of perfect quality the size of the earth..

and instead of a sparrow..
perhaps it is a honey bee.. bumping into it's side.. but not hard enough to incur injury as he flies away after that..
