Volunteering

Anyone here ever volunteered for the big brothers/big sisters or the ymca? I'm thinking seriously of doing it & was wondering what your experiences were like. I have a lot of time on my hands now a days & miss the children from my last relationship. I figured this would help me get back on my feet quicker & do a service to the community.

Mike

I had a football coach in middle school who didn't have any kids on the team. He was a commission-only salsman for a furniture store. That means that every minute he spent with us was a minute he could have spent making money.

I was a volunteer coach for a middle school football team. I loved it. Those kids were the best. I did it because someone did it for me. The only reason I stopped was because the schools took over the program and hired a teacher/coach to do the job. I really miss it now. I wish I had the time to start with another team.

It's pretty difficult to be accepted as the process is designed to weed out those who would not be a good influence on the kids but once you're in it can be very rewarding. You get the satisfaction of helping to mold a childs mind and that's pretty incredible. Some of these kids come from broken families and a bad homelife and you can make a difference in whether they grow up ok or behind bars.
