Here's the one memory I have of the Autobahn:
I was an army-brat and we lived in Wildflecken, Germany (West Germany at the time). My dad just bought BMW 320 (no "i"). It was used but the car was in perfect condition. Kind of a bright lime green as the Europeons tend to have bright primary colors on a lot of the cars.
Anyways, just pops and I are on the Autobahn seeing what the car could do. I was high school age but not old enough to drive yet. So we're flying down the road, doing a bit over a hundred mph...at the moment we happen to be in the fast lane (the passing lane). Then I notice my dad glance into the rear-view mirror, then suddenly and without warning swerve out of the passing lane into the lane to our right. As I just start to form the sentence "What's going on?", I get the "Wh---" sound out and then this bright red blur flies past us in the fast lane. Literally a blur. We were still doing 100mph easy, and this thing passed us as if we were going backwards. No idea what his speed may have been, but it must have been minimum 150-160mph, but I think that's being conservative. It wouldn't surprise me if it were in the range of 180 to 200mph.
I have never seen a vehicle traveling at a speed even close to that outside of a racetrack/dragstrip. Awesome sight. And from my dad's point of view a bit scary. He said it looked like this guy was going to go right through us if we didn't move immediately. Needless to say, from that point on pops respected the rules of the road on that Autobahn. The passing lane is for passing ONLY. Only one person on the road gets to drive in the passing lane and that's the guy with THE fastest car. And ain't no used BMW ever gonna be the fastest car on the 'bahn so he just accepted his place in the right lane from then on.

p.s., Oh yeah, what was it that passed us? I'm not 100% sure because he really was going amazingly fast. But I'm pretty sure I identified the whale-tail of a 911 turbo. It was definitely that "Porsche-red" color of paint too. If I didn't know any better I'd swear it was a hovercraft....it just went wooooosh!
