So sad. I hate to see this happen to our friends. Condolences to his family, friends and fellow soldiers on their loss.

I am deeply regretful.

Many an Australian and New Zealander (Anzac troops) lost their lives in The Battle of Greece during the Second World War.

And no, it was not entirely in vain.

When Mussulini invaded Greece and presented the Nazis with the first defeat of a Fascist army, Hitler was forced to enter the Balkans and send his motororized divisions as far south as as deepest Greece.

This was to cause him to lose a vital three weeks in launching Operation Barbarrosa--the invasion of the Soviet Union .

The onset of Winter, of course, was unforgiving and did not give the Nazis back those three weeks in the winter snows of Russia..

Greece lost a quarter of its population. The desperately needed British and Anzac military assistence remains greatly appreciated.

I am certain many Americans today are immensely grateful for the assistense given to our fighting men and woman today.

P.S. warthog, Knothead and other Members,

You might want to read the British Wartime (World War One) poets, Wilfred Owens, Sigfreid Sasoon on on the old question of whether it is "the old lie" (Owens) "Dolce et Decorum est Pro Patria Mori".

I still remember the line, "And each slow dawn , the drawing down of blinds".
