I thought that nowadays they zapped them with ultrasound which pulverized them into dust.

Advice: drink lots of fluids (read beer) if you don't want stones.

I had em back in the fall of 1999. They do hurt. I was told it was like being pregnant and giving birth.
Ouch.

My dads got a huge kidney stone right now, its doing some damage too. They had to implant somethign in him to push the stone back up into his kidney so they can get to it with the ultrasoudn stuff, but then the thing they implanted slipped and so he's been in agonizing pain and on heavy narcotics since last thursday. His stone is the size of your pinky fingernail across.
Ouch

I am living proof that drinking lots of beer will not prevent kidney stones. I have consumed mass quantities and still got stones.

I feel your pain! I have the same problem several years ago and lucky for me I was able to pass it normally after drinking some gallons of water. The pain is really indescribable .I hope I won't ever experience it again. Since then, I have made it a point to drink lots of water.
