"how penny per page might work" - has anybody seen this?
If you have not heard of this theoretical business model for the internet, go here to read it. Very interesting stuff.
What's your opinion of this. I would particularly like to hear Scott's view at this he has been a web site admin for.....8 years....I think I heard him say.....
Everyone check it out.

hmm
I think I view more than I could afford
Even at a simple penny per page
Besides personally I'd prefer a monthly fee... flat rate is always better and would probably be easier for scott as it wouldn't require as much coding.
Not to mention a person could simply delete their cookie and view for free and only pay when they want to post.

Did you read this article? I'm sure that the task of coding would not fall upon any one individual, even any one organization/company. It would be a joint effort for sure. Read it if you haven't. The idea is that no one person would do this, but the ENTIRE internet instead.
I would be particularly interested in opinions of people who are businessmen, studying business in college right now, or have run a website as a business for any duration.

it's a nice idea, there has to be someway for people to make money on the web. If it was fairly easy for people to make money off the web, it would do a great service to the web, like the article said. A penny a page would cost each person very little, but I can't see how there could be away of tracking everything... I mean think of all the web sites out there. Then think of all the countries out there in the world. There is just no way to do it.
Then even if you could, how long do you think it would take people to cheat the system. Not long that's for sure.
I feel the web should be a free place to visit, but bringing money into the pockets of people runing sites would do wonders to what is out there.

Perhaps we stop thinking about "making a profit" from every little thing we can...
use the internet to share ideas and research... to play a game with a friend on another continent.. to archive information/drivers on old/out of production computer parts.. etc. etc..
too much commercialization.. banner adds... subscription fees..
I myself prefer to read a hard copy of a magazine instead of one online.. and as such would never pay for an online subscription when I can pick it up at the newsstand.
Some things just aren't meant to be...
current model doesn't work too well... and a future model might or might not work.. people don't want to have to pay a small fee for every web page they view.. in addition to any internet connection fees..
basically.. they can't force it to work.. it either works or it doesn't..

I hear those words "the web should be free" that the article swore I'd hear. It makes an interesting point that this is the first time in the history of the world that people acutally EXPECT something that is valuable to remain FREE.
It really is an interesting paradigm shift, and I look forward to the debate this is sure to generate. The important thing is to atleast allow yourself to think about the possibility of the web costing something, and to not be short sighted.
I think about the concept of people cheating the system, sure there would be some. But no more than already cheat cable companies, phone companies, etc. And these business thrive while still providing a service that people want. Would you ever expect your cable or phone to be free? Of course not, and I'm not sure you should. Who would build and manage these systems if they didn't cost anything?

Twenty bucks a year...or maybe every six months...from 500 active TechIMO people...oughtta keep this lot with enough broadband for SIX sites...ya think? Knothead always goes for the simplest solution. Keeps the splinters away. |

maybe that's where the magic of the web comes from, in the fact that's it's free. No one has really figured out away to charge for it's contents in mass form other than ISP's and porn sites
Sure I think it would be great if people could make money with it, I'd be right there trying. I do think someone down the line will figure out away to make money from the web and it will nolonger be free, it will just cost us more out of the pocket.. in the end it will be like allways big companys make the money the litle guy gets shut out.

azkidd I agree kinda like long distance 6-10 cents a minute sounds cheap and it is i guess, but at end of month your like wow I talked that much to mom, bro etc. I surf constantly when I'm home, tv can go out window now. A lot of the pages you may open for few seconds and decide oh wrong link or whatever. Like I said in previous post They need to have page with links to products and they get $ for the hits. I might not mind paying for this site, but I go to quite a few sites and if they all charge $20.00-$30.00 a year that would be very expensive.
newbiewan I guess since we pay for the internet service we don't see it as free. But I see your point Aol and msn etc, don't pay the websites to operate as far as I know. I guess why so many dot coms's out of business now or not showing profit's. I just hate to think of per page fee though. damit now you got me thinking oooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh noooooooo
