Root canal tomorrow !
Got to get it done. I'm tired of my tooth bothering me all the time.
It was cracked, had a crown put on in Oct. Pain was worse after the crown was put on. I have waited for it to settle down for three months, doc says a root canel is the only option now.
I have been through this before. I'm not to scared of it, my dentist is pretty good, I'll take some Lortabs before hand and I should be ok.
Just got 100 posts today!

Congratz on the posts and good luck with the tooth. I'm in the "You'd better get your wisdom teeth pulled before they rot out' boat. Good thing I don't have insurance or money!

Root canal is no fun, but it beats the alternative.
I developed an abcess on a cracked tooth, while traveling two days in an unpressurized light plane. At 8 or 9000 feet, things seem to swell up and throb like you wouldn't believe. I was sitting in the right (co-pilot) seat, eating Ibuprofen and swilling 100 proof Smirnoff right out of the bottle, to ease the pain. Also, praying that I wouldn't have to fly the plane in an emergency...I woulda been SOL.
After that, root canal surgery was a walk in the park!

Is it one of your front teeth or the big molars? If it's a front one then there is only one root, but a rear one can have three or four. Check this site out, it's extremely informative: http://www.animated-teeth.com/../index.htm
I had root canal treatment last year on one of my crowned front teeth. It had to be done as an abcess had appeared. The crown was undamaged even with this work, but a few months later it started to work loose (not just coming unstuck) and a new crown had to be made. A nice job was done too of it!
The only thing I didn't like about the canal treatment was the adrenalin injections to stop the bleeding - they hurt - a lot shall we say!
As you say it has to be done, sooner rather than later. I love hearing about other peoples dental experiences, fascinating stuff!

There's no other way to say it, a root canal is some serious pain. Keep plenty of pharmaceuticals handy.
More pain now, less later.

Bes o' luck AMD. Root canals mark the bottom end of my personal "fun-meter". Due to some other medication I was taking at the time, I had to have a two-visit root canal done once without the benefit of any anesthesia at all. Never, I said, NEVER again!!!

I love my dentist.
he would'nt even think of working without numbing you up real good. Actually I've had two done recently. He sent me to 2 different specialist (long root's) for the root canal's, and then did all the finish work himself.
My front left canine has a metal post mounted in the tooth with the crown mounted to the post. The other tooth is a molar. At present it has a temporary filling , and it will be finished after the cleaning's are done.
Heck this guy even numb's me up to have my teeth cleaned.
So at my dentist root canal's are a piece of cake.
by the way his office is "comfort dental" one of the specialist he sent me to's name was (no joke) DR. Hurt!

Yeah, not to worry amdkt7...these guys are so good these days, the biggest hassle is having somebody 'rooting' about in your mouth.
I had a root canal under the same conditions you describe around 3-4 months ago. Walk in the park. I was back at work an hour later! Like I said, these guys are good.
And, you are SOOO doing the right thing, getting it handled now, before you end up in a plane w/ a bottle of vodka, and then discovering it..."Houston, we have a (hic) problem..."
