back from me Oz trip..

Man, Quite a few changes in the couple weeks I have been gone
First off, congrats to Surreal making Mod.
I had a very good time while in Oz, of course we barely scratched the surface on seeing things, but did get a few things done.
First off, to the members here that live in Melbourne, I can drive ANYWHERE on earth now..
19 Hours in various planes, get to Tulla, and right into a rental car, off to downtown Melb, smack in middle of the CBD, by way of the Tulla, through the wheel of death(Flemington roundabout..GAAA! TRAMS!!...CARS!!!...BUSES!! all coming together in one big circle..
Then,....a couple of good old"Hookies" to get to our Hotel..(more on these to the U.S drivers later..)
All this while driving on the opposite side of the road that I am acustomed to.. and nary a wreck(that I know of )
Did the great ocean road..man, if you go to Oz, you MUST drive this most splendid piece of tarmac.
I only wish I could have taken one of me bikes with me..
Went all through the CBD and saw a lot of stuff.
On to Sydney, went to the Blue Mtns/Katoomba area, to the zoo, and hung around the harbour area all day during the Australia day celebrations, then went to Darling harbour to see the fireworks.
More stuff what we did to follow, plus I will be putting up some pics over the next couple days.
Surprisingly, jet lag hasn't beat up on us when we got there or since we got back home.
I luved every minute we had in Oz, you guys have much to be proud of
over and out for now.. desmo

The great ocean road is indeed one of the best drives on the planet. There is much to see in Australia but what I enjoy the most about living here is the expanse.

Drove across from Adelaide South Australia across the Nullabor Plains to Perth in Western Australia. A 3 day trip with only a dozen or so townships dotted along the route - I saw 3 trucks 2 cars and an eagle dragging a dead kangaroo off the road on the whole trip. It includes an expanse of raod which I believe is the longest straight stretch of road on the planet - 90 miles dead straight a bend then another 80 miles...dead straight road. I stopped right in the middle of the road, shut the engine off and strained to hear a sound - couldn't, just my breathing. Looked around and I swear I could see the curve of the earth!

Sydney Harbour is one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. I was there last week and spent hours upon hours just strolling around the harbour enjoying all the 'sites'. I think ZZ-Top said it best..."they got a lot of nice girls down there".

Yeah, the Great Ocean Road is one of the best bike tracks around! Did a few trips over that when the first 500cc Grand Prix's where held a Phillip Island (near Melbourne). Apart from the caravans which slow you down, it's one of the great roads to ride on!
IMO anyway

Misc

Desmocat, glad to hear that you made to my homeland down under. I myself am heading back there in 6 days for a friends wedding, but I lived on the opposite coast (Western Australia) Perth to precise. It's beautiful, everyone should go there at least once in their life.
I love to hear of people who can make it to Oz, but you have to realize it's a big place and towns/cities aren't as close as they are here, so please if you go, do not expect to see it all in a week or two, but it will wet you appetite and make you want to come back.

Paul

Wombat, I hear ya on the seeing all the sights thing.
Sooo much to see and do, it's kind of like coming to the states and trying to see all the sights here in a couple of weeks, can't be done and most certainly wouldn't be able to go in depth.

I plan on returning many more times there(as time and money allow) and see me and the Mrs. coming down for extended tours when we retire
Have fun on your trip home, and I have sympathy for you, my bum still has nightmares ofsitting in economy class airline seats for loooooong peroids of time
Next time, business class!
Have fun back home mate. desmo

A bit late... but...

Welcome back, desmocat! Just took a look at your gallery pics... oh my! They are gorgeous, especially the "12 Apostles".

It sounds like you had a wonderful, if whirlwind, tour and saw alot. I've never been to Australia, but it looks beautiful.

Did you have any time in Fiji?

Thanks for the pics and glad you and Mrs. D. had a safe trip
