I'm mourning for my first home build

About two years ago - I built my first pc. Nothing special -

it was a p233mmx, 64mb edo ram, 2.5gb hdd, etc.

I gave it to my brother inlaw about a year ago (including 14" monitor) -

Now I found out, they liked it so much, they went and got a store-bought HP w/ a 1.3g Tbird in it (great!!)

But, they THREW AWAY my first effort -

I didn't say anything, but my heart sank....... "threw it away... THREW IT AWAY!!!!"

I've got a K6-2 350 chip just sitting in a drawer... coulda been another UD cow.....

oh well...

Doh! I got my 486 in 95 and I almost couldn't throw it away last year (It will still run Linux!!). I feel for ya. It sucks when people don't realize that you put work into something and you're kind of proud of it and they disregard or toss it.

But there will be more computers, and more beaters to run UD later down the road.

put a bottle of Jack Daniels on the floor - under the table at Easter - and sucker kick him -

sorry - I know its not nice - but its the least offensive way to get even.

Im sorry to hear that.. i think thats idiotic to throw a working computer away, especially something that nice. 233 mhz isnt the fastest i know, but at that speed with 64 megabtyes of ram like you had, it makes a fantastic web browsing and home office machine, surf the web, email, do reports in office, hell even play a game, quake 3 runs great on my 233 mmx with a voodoo 2 card! and why in theheck would you throw a working monitor away? I really hope some kid who couldnt or his or her parents couldnt afford a computer found it in the hopes of fixing it, only to see their eyes widen when it turned on and worked perfectly I never throw away my computer parts. i give alot of them away to people for low cost or free, and even knewof 2 extremely low income families where i pieced together 2 pentium boxes for them and gave them away even a 386 can be put to good use, give it to a kid, put dos and windows 3.1 on it and he can do school work and play a game of doom, give it to a older person and they can play card games and talk to their friend on a chat program, even tossing a 386 is a waste, hell even aold xt or 286 can be used for wordperfect 5.0 and such, just hook up a equally old printer and you have a quick cheap wordproccessor for a typing class, and maybe you can get away with installing indy 500 on it, i knowi did when i was a kid throwing away a old box is bad enough, but a pentium 233 mmx and monitor is a damn shame.

heres your sign....

I agree. One gets attached to stuff like that. Even your old, favorite, worn out shoes or a T shirt. Really sucks.

I echo XT's thoughts. Of course I'm a pack rat, but I still have the case from my first computer. I'll probably build something in it again when I have some free time.

Yeah, that's sad...how many families would be thrilled with a machine like that. Gosh, some extra RAM a fresh Windows install, and that would have worked for most people, let alone some poor family that didn't have any computer.

Anything under P100 and I don't get too worked up, but that machine still had alot of life left.

Thrown away a P233? AND THE MONITOR? My family still has two P150s! (well, a 120 and a 133...they don't know they're OC'ed)

I could do so much with one of those!

Yes, it is. I blame this stuff on the Windows-consumer phenomenon. All the bloatware keeps raising the bar for what is considered "the minimum hardware." People don't understand that that artificial minimum only applies to Windows software; and they don't understand that there's anything else but Windows.

I still have the parts from my first 386 PC, and my old 486-Dx2. Some of them exist inside the first P90 I built, some even inside my new Athlon XP box. That P90 trickled down in parts through my wife & kids, but eventually came back to me. Whenever I give a gift like this, it always goes with a catch.

"If it breaks down, or you don't want it any more, you have to give it back."
