Bad day at work !!RANT!!

Ever have one of those days where you want to strangle everyone? First I come in and find out they took away my laptop and get accused of trying to steal it. If I were going to steal it, why the heck would I have left it on my desk in plain site overnight? So the head of the IT department yells at me. The guy is younger than me (and I'm only 23) and expects me to bat an eyelash when he tells me I'm messing up his department? I got news for you buddy, if it wasn't for me, your department would've been $#!t canned a year ago. I swear I'm the only person here who works with computers that knows his head from his arse. Next on the list, they tell me my job for the day is to copy 80GB worth of files from about 800 different folders onto a hard drive for Charter to take back to corporate with them. Well damn if that isn't putting my programming skills to work, holy man!! Not that my skills are all that considerable, but I've got other things I could be doing, rather than grunt work when we've got a bunch of grunts that don't have anything to do. So I grab the computer they're doing the file copy on and move it into my office. Now the dang thing keeps freezing up on me. Thank you IT for not knowing how to use a Ghost server or Win2K hardware setup. Some brainiac went and took IE6 off here thinking that it would be better for computer. No, taking IE6 is not better for the computer. So I request a hub, because I'm stuck with an old D-Link DE-812TP+, which is only 10Mb. What do I get? A big honkin Canary CTX-8016 with a bad cooling fan that makes so much noise I almost have to crank my headphones to drown it out. Nevermind the fact that I only need a small four port 10/100 D-Link that all the IT guys have with ONE freakin computer plugged into them. That's inconsequential since I'm in Engineering. I stress again the fact that I do all of the IT department's work when it comes to AutoCAD or the Engineering department in general because hey hey, the know nothing about AutoCAD at all. Okay, fine, I'll crank up my heaphones. Hey guys, we have this brilliant idea, let's move SRV004 and rename it. Okay, great, we're installing an IBM SAN so I'm all for that. Oops, the IT guys messed up again and installed all the Windows printers on SRV004 instead of through the NDS. Now no one in Engineering can print their maps out! Oh, did I mention there's only one IT guy today and he's out on lunch. Great, I get to fix it!! There's only what, 200 machines here that can no longer print? Lovely!! Sorry, we can't afford ZenWorks, you have to go to each machine and change the path by hand. We can't afford ZenWorks? We pay $3,000 a copy for AutoCAD MAP which only three people in the company use the features of but every drafter has, and we can't afford $500 for each station for ZenWorks? Sounds about right, doesn't it? <pant pant>

Anyone else having one of these days? One of these days I'm going to bring a paintball gun to work and there are going to be a lot of people covered with paint...

I can think of only one thing that comes to mind after reading of your troubles today.

Stress, noun: The confusion created when ones mind over-rides the body's basic desire to choke the living s--t out of some a--hole who desperately needs it.

---------------------------------

Personally, when I hit the printer problem, I would have fixed my terminal, and left IT's a$$es hanging out in the breeze with the other 200 terminals. Then, when they ask why you could still print, tell them how you fixed your terminal. When they ask why you didn't do the rest of the terminals, just tell them "That's IT's department, I'm still fighting with this 80Gb transfer on an obselete router."

Whir -

I just had the GM come down and tell me that the lady that kept phoning my cell phone - while drunk - and told me for 35 days that she was quitting - has been LAID OFF!

Laid off - my butt - for six years I had that sorry thing call me at 0630am and say she was sick only to replace her with people for 0700am.
When she left - they just discovered that for six years she never worked enough hours to qualify for full time benefits.

I'll split a case of paint ball ammo with yah!

Kuasi - That was good, I'm still laughing.

Wiz - Red or green?

Wart - I make more than they do. There's no way I'm taking a pay cut to work for an arse backward department. Only way I'd ever do it is if I were in charge and that's not going to happen any time soon.

Whoa! Bad day, man!

I haven't had a time like that since I quit working for overly-big, over-stuffed, under-managed companies.

We only have ten guys here: almost all engineers. I don't do much engineering anymore, just consult now and then. But I'm the head CAD guy, the lan guy, the hardware guy, the Windows guy, the backup guy, the web guy, the help-desk guy, and the "someone sent a sick joke to my e-mail" guy.

When something goes wrong, I fix it*. When someone screws up, I recover their bacon. When we need somthing, I spec it, source it, buy it, install it, configure it, and train everyone to use it. Because if I can't "fix" it, it won't get fixed.

Everybody here knows this. They appreciate it, and they stay out of my remaining hair because of it. I've gotten a raise and a bonus every year, too. I'd probably make more money working for General Morons, or International Boondoggle Machines; but life is too short to live that way. I quit having bad days.

Happy days, my friends. Happy days

Cadd.

*Often with the advice from the members of TechIMO, to whom I am certainly most thankful.
