Ok, I have an embarrassing question...

I can't believe I've gone so long without ever finding out what this means. But it seemed like one of those obvious things that everyone knows so I figured I'd save myself the embarrassment of asking and just wait till I figured it out. ...Well, it's been years now and I still don't know what it means. So please tell me...

what does [sic] mean?

It's used in print when reproducing someone elses work and a word is spelled wrong. They re-produce what the author wrote, with the [sic] to show it was mis-spelled intentionally. To replicate the original work..

How Bizarre OuT, I just looked that up and talked to someone about it a couple days ago!

Hey, Out, the only embarrassing question you can have is the one you don't ask!

Yeah, I remember someone asked this a bit ago, too, so you are obviously not the only one. Sometimes we assume everyone understands what we say, but unless we all grew up together, read the same stauff, and go to the same school and other places, I guess we can't assume it.

I "embarrassed" myself the other day by asking on an anime thread "what is anime?". DOH! But they were nice and didn't abuse me, just kidded me and answered my question (I now know anime is Japanese animation - never would have known that had I not asked!).

So keep asking the "embarrassing" questions!

Does it stand for anything?
...Like is it an acronym?
Spelling intentionally corrupted?
Spelling I Copied?
Spelling I Cantbeheldresponsibleforbecauseididntdoit?

I knew what it meant coz Ive seen it several times and just learned from context (Usually was on webpages where people copyed and pasted emails next to a misspelt word).
Who the heck comes up with these things anyways?

Out.
It's latin, sic = so.
Eg: 'So' written.

Used to differentiate a typo in the original quote, from a typo when republished.

Also used in quotes, to blame the quoted, for mangled metaphors, preposterous ideas et al.

May well be useful here, when quoting. LOL!
