if you sand them down to get the lacquer off, then you can use polyurethane, i have to wonder what kind of lacquer was used, usually if it's sprayed on it'll hold up just fine, if your looking for durable buy the stuff they use for gym floors, there is something called diamond something that will hold up against anything, menards carries it. But polyurethane til your hearts content if you sand the lacquer off, which is the only way you'll get the wood to accept the new stain. Or check into "Helmsman" it's a spar-urethane, made for outdoor use, boats and what not, used for entry doors alot, has a nice appearance, similar to lacquer, but more durable......
