I have 2 kitties (brother and sister) and had a similar problem at first, not that they wanted to play, but rather they didn't like to be one side of a closed door and me on the other.
I started letting them sleep with me in my room, made them each a bed that was big enough for both of them because sometimes they like to cuddle. I just bought some old pillows and a blanket at a thrift store and cut the blanket in half and sewed the cut side of each and then put each pillow and blanket half in boxes, but sometimes they want up on my bed so that's ok, as long as it will keep them quiet and still. So far so good. But make sure you keep your bedroom door shut with it in your room or he might want to run in and out and that's quite disturbing, trust me. In my apartment, my bedroom has a master bathroom hooked to it so I put their litter box and food/water in the bathroom so that I don't get rudely wakened by their 'stinkies'.
I hope this helps. If not, the last resort I sometimes use is catnip. Get it buzzed up pretty good on the stuff and he'll pass out sooner or later, at least these furrballs do. Another thing may break him of it if he associates the meowing at the door with something bad, is to get a squirt gun and it may take awhile, but each time he does that, abruptly open your door and zap the little bugger. Sooner or later something should sink in.
good luck
