earthlink has a two pronged broadband approach:
1. dsl. this is what they've had for a while, and are pushing it more and more places. they were telling me i had dsl capability a long time before verizon would admit the lines were to spec.
2. cable. earthlink's in the cable broadband market, through, you guessed it, time-warner cable's infrastructure. basically, you're paying for earthlink, but they're piping it to you via aoltw's backbone.
i got one of those ads too. it had my name on it, but i figured it was because i am a dial up subscriber.
(edit) and to be utterly fair to earthlink, they had the partnership with twc BEFORE aol gobbled them up...
