Crab fishing

I just saw a program about crab fishing in the north atlantic.
They said it was the most dangerous job in the world, anybody know if thats true?

Also what kind of skills are required besides knowing your way around a boat?

The thing that made me interested in this was the fact that these guys make between 50000$-150000$ per season, a season is roughly 3months.

im thinking that if it´s not too dangerous it could be fun to try it
for a season

Well was the show that showed the big waves, etc. etc.
I wouldn't mind trying some "small-time" crab fishing..Nothing that will make me get $50-150K for 3 months work. You know if your making that much, you have to be doing SOMETHING fairly hard...

I just watched a crab fishing show the other day too. it is very dangerous, My brother in law used to do that kind of work and he got injured cause he got caught in one of the ropes heading out to sea and managed to break free but not without injury.

If you do this type of work a word of caution. Be prepared to do some very hard manual labor and long days with little sleep. Also need to work very fast and with precision.

Many people have been killed in these working enviroments for not being alert at all times. These cages they toss out are extremely heavy and when they are tossed out better be out of the way of the ropes.

My brother in law really enjoyed the work, he is the type that loves hard manual labor and fast work but his injury caused him to not be able to do this type of work anymore.

So if you are not afraid of hard work and high probabilty of injurys go for it.

Let us know.

No kiddin', man!

I had a friend whose father and uncle used to work the commercial tuna boats out of San Pedro, CA...this was incredibly dangerous work; as the rate of tuna caught per MINUTE was so high, that it was not uncommon for even the most experienced men to get an arm or leg caught in crossed lines...Result:Instant amputation...

Plus, if they're paying that much money, they must have INCREDIBLE expectations for how many crabs you're going to pull up.

Yea I am sure they do! I think I will stick to going to college and trying to become a computer programmer instead of going out to sea with some manual labor. (Not really cut out for it. )

Ya you are right Knothead,
I think they do have a quota they need to fill in order to make the business profitable. Plus the fact that everytime you pull up a cage you have to HURRY sort the crab cause they need to be over a certain size and then toss the cage back in the sea before you arrive to the next cage. They don't like missing cages cause that means Lost time, So ya gotta work fast and hard. If you don't you will cause problems with the other team members on the rig. Thier is no room for tension. Team skills are a MUST!!!

if you don't like working in a team, forget it. CAuse you can not do it solo.

Thier are no screwing around for these commerical ships. You screw around you will get canned instantly. ER not canned tuna, but Canned as in Fired.

You'd think by now there would be an EASY way to do something like this, right?

No not really, cause the ropes are attached to a pully system and pulls the heavy cages in, that doesn't account for the man power that is needed to slam the cages onto the docking station to make sure they get settled right from the pull ropes. oh ya, watch your fingers!!!

Hoo, BOY!! Wanna hear a story about that?

A coupla years ago, a well-known makeup artist and I were doing the makeup on a male model for a Lexus commercial, the makeup giving the illusion that the guy blended into the car, transparent-style.

Anyway, one shot called for the car (with model at the wheel) to be on a rolling platform with the camera mounted to the side, and a huge truck was dragging this whole thing all over Mt. Tamalpais (in S.F.)

It was a just-before-sunset shot, so the Dir. only had about 20 min. of usable light. I had to be positioned under the camera, (touching up the model's knuckles,) so I saw what happened next...there was a guy who had to arrange the safety belt over the model...hanging off the side of this trailer at 40 mph...he wasn't done when the Dir. yelled "Roll film"...and didn't IMMEDIATELY exit the shot.

This Dir. ordered the whole flying thing to a STOP...and ordered the guy OFF of the trailer... stranded as that circus again roared back up to speed...

I assume one of the assistants radioed in to go p/u the poor guy, but I will never forget the look on his face, or the sudden brutality of command when a team player goofs.
