Crown Prince Abdullah gave a speech to Saudi dignitaries blaming "Zionists" for the anti-government insurgency. "It became clear to us now that Zionism is behind terrorist attacks in the Kingdom," the state-run Saudi Press Agency quoted him as saying.

In Washington, Saudi Ambassador Prince Bandar ibn Sultan called the attack "vicious and murderous."

"This is a cowardly act carried out by criminals who have turned their backs on their faith and on all of humanity," he said in a statement.

Now that is clear and right...

Chris Matthews asked Prince Bandar on Hardball last week if Abdullah's statement represented the view of the Saudi government. Bandar said absolutely not. Too many princes, IMO.

But as a recent book points out (forget the name -- it was excerpted in The Atlantic Monthly I think), the Saudi leadership is in disarray, with a whole lot of in-fighting and back-stabbing going on.

Unfortunately, Crown Prince Abdullah is the Saudi government; the King is a vegetable for all practical purposes.

Then he's got an ambassador to the U.S. who publically rejected his views. What does that mean? Maybe Bandar just meant that they only hold that view when addressing their own people.

Maybe Bush should ask for some clarification, since we're so buddy-buddy with them.
