Kids Is Scrapple "nasty"?

I love this stuff, it's great on breakfast sandwiches and with eggs and stuff. Very salty, greasy, and therefore delicious, at least to me.

Anyway, I hear people say all the time that they hate this stuff, and that the mere smell of it cooking can turn their stomachs. What is so terrible about this stuff? To me, it's like sausage or bacon, and it seems to me that there's nothing except reading the ingredients that would turn your stomach.

Love it. But you do have to cook it properly.

What is that stuff?

All I know about it is that it's beloved to natives of Philadelphia, and that journalist James Bacon once won an audience with Grace Kelly, because he knew she was a good Philly girl...

Well, she was in Europe, filming a movie. Bacon took her a beeeeg mess o' Scrapple! That got her attention!

But what IS it??

Seeing as I've gotten this far in my life without knowing what's in it, I can only assume it's sorta like the Scottish dish "Haggis"....

Another one you don't wanna know about.

Scrapple is nasty. Wasnt it on an episode of Fear Factor?

I tried it when I lived in Altoona Pa. I was talked into ordering it and first bite was real bad. A friend told me to put sryup on it, it will be great that way. Yea right. I about gagged.

HAHAHHAAA!! Oh yeah, me too!

BUT... the natives are downright CRAZY about this dish...I think it's like the time I was working in an extremely urban area *cough* south central L.A.* and my buddy took me out for some "soul food"...

Okay, look, I'm a white guy, (and the fact that my Japanese friends got me hooked on raw fish notwithstanding,) this was some pretty bad jazz, man!

Greasy collard greens, "dirty rice" (believe me, you DON'T wanna know about this stuff) ham hocks (this is basically pig's feet and knuckles) and gumbo.

Actually, the gumbo was pretty good, in a mouth-searing HOT kind of way. Shrimp, crab, and unidentified other stuff. By that time, I had learned not ask what was in it...

The experience was topped off with as much corn bread as I wanted. Oh man, give me corn bread when I'm hungry!

Dang, that sounds like a good song title....

Sorry, I digress. This, ah...SCRAPPLE you speak of....

Again: what the hell IS IT?!?

What is Scrapple?
Revered across the vast and rugged plains of Pennsylvania as "Much More'n Just Parts!," Scrapple sits atop all others in the pantheon of breakfast meats composed primarily of the unmentionable.

First, a few more words for the uninitiated... Scrapple is a processed meat product composed of cuts and pieces of meat which -- for one reason or another -- will not make meals in themselves. The bulk of these come to us courtesy of the face, head, and chest cavity of the common hog.

Scrapple should never be confused with Spam. A product of the Hormel Foods Corporation, Spam is spiced ham in a can - ham being the upper portion of a pig's hind leg. Scrapple, on the other hand, is an amalgamation of tendons, cartilage, feet, skin, ears, nose, gums and more. In short, it's all the garbage that should be thrown away. Some people eat it. Really.
