I'm not an expert, but I was licensed to sell Life Insurance at one time. In my state, the coverage was binding as soon as we signed the papers. Perhaps its different in Texas, but it sure sounds to me like this company is simply trying to avoid paying on a claim. Again, all I know is what I read in the article, and there may be circumstances that were not revealed in that article.
However, if you empathize with this women and her family, and/or think the insurance company is in the wrong, how about lending a hand by contacting this company and letting them know that you think their position on this stinks, and that they should pay the widow. I think its bad enough that she lost her husband, she shouldn't have to go to trial to get his death benefits.
