common sense in food intake is definitely out of vogue

The general manager was carving the meat, and became concerned about having enough for other patrons, Johanson said. So when Amaama went up for his 12th slice, the manager asked Amaama to stop.

They should have some common courtesty to leave some for others.

Screw common courtesy. The restaurant offered a buffet to it's clientele. The assumption there is that one can enjoy this buffet without worrying about the other customers. It is the restaurant's responsibility to have enough food to feed the customers.

it is NOT the restaurant's responsibility to offer ANYTHING as long as they don't CLAIM to be an "all-you-can-eat buffet." Just like gas stations do NOT guarantee that they won't run out of gas for the day.

But gas stations do not offer unlimitied access to their pumps for one price. You pay per amount used. A buffet is a buffet. The unwritten idea is that you can gorge yourself to your heart's content at a buffet. If a restaurant does not offer that, then they should not call it a buffet, or do what restaurants like Bonanza do. You buy the meat portion of your meal and the actual buffet is included in that price. If a restaurant has a limit to what customers can consume, then they need to post that amount.

I think they deserved to get kicked out. If the restaurant never made the claim that it was all-you-can-eat, they don't have to live up to it.

Code:
Buffet (wordweb):
1. A piece of furniture that stands at the side of a dining room; has shelves and drawers
2. A meal set out on a buffet at which guests help themselves
3. Usually inexpensive bar

Code:
Buffet (dictionary.com):
1. A large sideboard with drawers and cupboards.
    A. A counter or table from which meals or refreshments are served.
B.A restaurant having such a counter.
2. A meal at which guests serve themselves from various dishes displayed on a table or sideboard.
Nothing in there about an all-you-can-eat rule.

I think the 'serve themselves' portion covers that. One thing the definition does not indicate is any limits.

"But the restaurant reserves the right to talk to patrons if they abuse the buffet — a rare occurrence, he said. " It's a private restaurant, they can treat their customers as they please
