I don't have any problem with someone owning an SUV, but why deny that you own one?

I just thought it was funny considering if Kerry is elected he wants all vehicles to be averaging something like 35 mpg by 2015. Also while doing an interview in detroit he listed all sorts of Big suv type vehicles he owned to sound good to car makers in detroit.

This is what Kerry said today: Quote: "I don't own an SUV," said Kerry, who supports increasing existing fuel economy standards to 36 miles per gallon by 2015 in order to reduce the nation's dependence on foreign oil supplies.
Kerry thought for a second when asked whether his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, had a Suburban at their Ketchum, Idaho, home. Kerry said he owns and drives a Dodge 600 and recently bought a Chrysler 300M. He said his wife owns the Chevrolet SUV. "The family has it. I don't have it" |
3 Months ago, during a Michigan campaign stop Kerry was asked: Quote: Q: What kind of vehicles does your family drive? A: We have some SUVs. We have a Jeep. We have a couple of Chrysler minivans. We have a PT Cruiser up in Boston. I have an old Dodge 600 that I keep in the Senate. ... We also have a Chevy, a big Suburban.
| He quickly associated himself with the SUV(s)when asked about it by the autoworkers, but he seems just a little bit reluctant to fess up on "Earth Day" | |

It get worse:
The Washington Times
"Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry and his mega-rich wife, Teresa Heinz, own a gas-guzzling private jet, an energy-eating power yacht, have five mansions that consume thousands of gallons of oil to heat and cool — and keep a fleet of SUVs running night-and-day outside their Beacon Hill mansion," NewsMax.com reports.
"But that didn't stop Sen. Kerry from blasting President Bush's environmental record [Tuesday]," NewsMax said.
" 'Being responsible about the environment is not some goo-goo, do-gooder, silly notion that you embrace once a year on Earth Day,' railed Mr. Kerry to a Florida crowd. 'It's important to life itself.' "
"Really?
"It doesn't seem particularly important to the Heinz Kerrys, whose Gulfstream V private jet gobbles up thousands of gallons of jet fuel annually. Dubbed the 'Flying Squirrel' by Teresa, this $35 million gas guzzler features a plasma TV, two bathrooms, fancy mahogany and burlwood paneling and gold-plated fixtures, according to Boston [Herald columnist and radio talk-show host] Howie Carr.
"So far reporters have had little to say about the contrast between Sen. Kerry's staunch environmentalism, along with his wife's decision to turn the Heinz family endowment into a green crusade — and the would-be first family's energy-wasting lifestyle."
NewsMax added: "And the Heinz Kerrys don't seem to be particularly big fans of that old environmental slogan, 'Think Globally, Act Locally.' Their neighbors in Beacon Hill, for instance, have been grumbling lately about the fleet of Secret Service SUVs the candidate and his wife keep out in front of their palatial digs — with engines running 24-hours a day."

I don't get it.
Are the conservatives on this forum now preaching that it is a sin to have wealth? Mrs Kerry got rich legally. In our capitalist system that is a reward for people's hard work that properly provided goods and services to the marketplace.
If I could afford a Gulfstream, I might buy one too. That doesn't mean I wouldn't strive to make auto fuel standards higher.
As for the Secret Service keeping their SUVs on all night? As trivial as it is, that is hardly something you can blame Kerry for.
It seems to me that the Bushies have latched on to this non-issue because they have no substantive issues to address.

I think the point is the double standard that the Heinz-Kerry clan wishes to impose on everyone else. That being said, neither John or Teresa worked a day for the hundreds of millions they possess, they go it the old fashioned way; they married it.

Mrs. Kerry could lease a more fuel efficient plane, rather that insist on owning a gas guzzling 727. She probably needs the write - off's I guess. I'm mean who has'nt had to trade in a gas guzzler for a newer vehicle with better mileage? I know, catsup people are different.
Mr. Kerry can ask the Secret Service to shut off their engines. He is a US Senator and out ranks them. But, he must lack the backbone to tell them what to do. It might hurt their self - esteem.
Republicans are proud of her wealth. I am jealous of a man that could marry for so much money! He acts like he's just domestic help, (a gigilo?) since she has all the money and he has none. Poor John should have married Jane.
But, the evil Republicans will still insist on seeing her tax returns. If she sandbags for '03 (by filing for extensions, legally circumventing the issue), she'll be able to produce '02. I'd really like to get a look at how she pays her self out of her non-profit (I.E. non - tax paying) charities that she runs. Especially the ones that give to Moveon.org. She isn't a protected entity like the Reverend Jessie Jackson. It's called "political laundring". But she's special.
I heard the GWB's ranch is solar heated and uses little or no electricity! Funny he hasn't brought it up.

I'm always reminded of a blue collar worker who approached Robert Kennedy when he ran for president in 1968. The worker said to Kennedy, "You never worked a day in your life." Before Kennedy could respond, the man added, "and you haven't missed anything."
The fact is, that the money the Kerry's have is theirs. My mayor, Mayor Blumenthal, has a Gulfstream also and flies around on NYC business at his own expense.
Every president has a 747 at his disposal that uses thousands of pounds of fuel every flight. That same president is expected to make environmental and energy policy. Is it a double-standard to urge conservation and fuel economy after stepping off Airforce One? Maybe yes. Maybe no. Either way, it doesn't really matter as long as we get public serving energy and environmental policy.

The whole campaign is a perfect example of good ole , pure D B.S.
Nero fiddled while Rome burned and we have to put up with this sorry rhetoric while we're going down the tubes. I do beleive that NONE of them give a damn about you , me our families and he future of our country. They just , like the bowivals, looking for a home. I'm not a doom sayer, just taking a realistic observation of the condition of our country and the outlook for our position in the world arena. Look at the deficit...in the TRIILIONS !!! Now how the H#ll did it get that way ????? A stupid war and tax cuts and loop holes for Big Bussiness. How many here atre out of work or forced to take a lower paying job. Had to sell htere home and move into a dinky apt. Are you able to fill up your car and take a trip for the weekend or have to hang around and hope the unemployment check will get one more greasy burger. There are people hurting in our country and the picture doesn't seem to be getting any better..except for the oil and \gas ans munitions companies. Don't forget the rubber and tire guys, airplane tires aren't cheap. Just ask yourself, are you better off now than a year
or two ago ??? Be honest. http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/lou.dobbs.tonight/
