compare his attitudes to people like, say, a self centered pouter like Allen Iverson
good to see there are people left in the world who are concerned for others and willing to do something about it

The former Cardinals safety shocked his teammates and fans in May 2002, when he returned from his honeymoon and signed up with the Army.

Sen. John McCain said, "I am heartbroken today by the news of Pat Tillman's death. The tragic loss of this extraordinary young man will seem a heavy blow to our nation's morale, as it is surely a grievous injury to his loved ones."
Sen. John Kyl released a statement calling Tillman "a great American hero in the truest sense. He had already given up so much, including an incredible football career and loving family, to fight for his country in the war on terrorism. His patriotism and courage are an inspiration and we are grateful for his ultimate sacrifice."
Rep. Jeff Flake said, "Pat Tillman exemplified the sacrifice, selflessness, and service of the U.S. military. Nowadays, genuine role models in professional sports are few and far between, but Tillman proved that there are still heroes in sports."

This is one thing that aggravates me.
Just because someone voices their Patriotism and lets it be known due to their stature, shouldn't give them the spot light more than any other lost person. Yes his patriotism was bar none. But because of the press time prior to going and his stature of being a pro ball player, he is being glorified more.
What about everyone of the other american or non-american soldiers, sailors, or airmen that were over there and lost their lives? They didn't have any Patriotism? BULLS&^T. I was over there in the Med during the Air Campaign on the U.S.S. Roosevelt. The organized chaos workings of an Aircraft Carrier doing it's job in a wartime situation will smack reality right into your face.
I can't even imagine what goes through the minds of the ground pounders risking their life more than what I was on the flight deck of the Carrier. For those that have lost their lives already.... they aren't getting the press/media that a certain few others have had. (Jessica)
If I had to go back over there and actually be on the ground this time, it would scare the living bajeesus out of me. But I would go.
The real stories that I have heard from Marines coming back to the base that WERE over there ground pounding in the city's and rural areas make me realize we are doing the right thing for the Iraqi ppl. The ones that want their life back not being ruled by dictatorship. That is what the Iraqi ppl want. Their everyday lives back, which we are helping them get back.
Where am I going with all this? I'm not really sure. But one person who loses their life DOES NOT deserve more recognition than the next person that loses their life.
My condolences go out to his family. The loss is tragic just like all the others. Just had to vent.

I agree with your point, but the issue here is that this guy walked away from a very high paying and relatively safe career when he didn't have to. No one would have thought less of him. The recognition isn't so much for his service as it is for the courage and patriotism he showed by leaving the good life behind to serve his country. No doubt there are hundreds of brave heroes coming home in flag-draped coffins. No argument there. They all deserve our utmost respect and admiration. But damn few of them walked away from the life this guy could have had. His sacrifice was double. He gave up the good life for his country, and then he gave his life for his country as well.
