Did the draft have a certain order?

When people were drafted into the military, was there a certain order for who was drafted? Were unemployed people taken before employed people? Blue collar before white collar?

In the Vietnam Era, the draft was considered unfair. Those with money got deferments as students, some held "national defense jobs," and whatever.

In 1969, they created a lottery. Those born on that date were called up in the order their birthdate was drawn. The first lottery had too many birthdays bunched together. So in 1970, they put the birthdates in one hopper and a sequence number in abother. First the date was picked. Then its sequence was picked. It worked better for those who would have been drawn first!

When it got down to crunch time, the government was drafting into the Marines. Quite often, a judge would give a person a choice of the military or prison!

yeah that's me. I was luckily born in the early early 80's, and let's hope there's no draft! if there is talk of one, I can't imagine they'd stiff us 9-14's twice in a row!

I think I'm havin' a flashback!

The "good" ole days, I remember them...sorta. We would have a party on lottery day with beer, wine, and even occasional herbal refreshments. The entire dorm would gather together and watch those numbers as they were posted. By 1973 there was no enthusiasm at all.
