Removing decals on a vehicle

Is there anyway to get vinyl decals off a vehicle? Friend of mine just got an '00 XTerra and has some on there, some zig zag stripes or whatever on the side....if it was me, i'd want them off in a heartbeat, she hasn't said anyhting...I didn't know if you could take them off w/o wrecking the paint.

Any suggestions?

Hair dryer? Auto body shops have to have a way of doing it without wrecking too much stuff. That of course doesn't help you, but there's got to be a way.

Are you going to try and do a SF mock training exercise? Covertly remove the "zig zag stripes or whatever?" Sounds like fun. Wait for me!

There is also stuff made by 3M called "release agent". Most auto glass shops have it, maybe they'll sell you a can. (or give you a nearly empty one to test).

Test it somewhere like in the trunk or something to make sure you don't "release" your paint!

I use a hair dryer to soften the stuff then scrap it off with a razor.

Alternatively , you could wrap the car in all zig-zig lines, so the present one won't be so noticable. And Mike can still help you in this covert operation.

Mike -

D00givis Maximus (the 3rd) - Why yes, that could work....it's like instead of getting a rust spot fixed on your vehicle, simply let the rest of the car rust and voila!

My bad....I should have clarified that it's actually on the vehicle metal itself, not the glass :-/

I did it to my *cough* Geo Metro *cough* and I used a blow dryer, then a gel, bug, and tar remover to get the last of it...

An eraser wheel (bought at auto parts places) attached to a variable speed drill works real well. My ex brother in law details cars for a living and swears by this method.

I think I had one of those in my Dremel kit, albeit a smaller version....is it kind of a rubbery-type wheel? Some how I don't see her being comfortable with taking a drill to her vehicle...if it seems like a viable option, I'll go to AutoZone and ask them about it, along with any other solutions.
