Spam from forums

Hi

I want to change my email (in the user cp) to my primary email, but I'm afraid of doing so at the risk of getting spam from crawlers getting my email from these boards. Are these boards safe - secure so that my email will not be leaked?

I would say that the email addy you register with is fairly safe here. If you are really worried about spammers picking it up, just make sure you set the option of other members to send you email to 'No'.

The biggest risk is posting your email in a public forum like this, which crawlers will find and use. If you ever wnat to provide your email in a public forum, mask it so crawlers won't find it, like myname at my isp dot com, or something similar.

But the folks who run these forums are pretty trustworthy, IMO, and your email addy isn't gonna be sold or otherwise made publicly available by them.

Putting your e-mail addy in your profile is pretty safe as mick says.

However, just remember to never ever post it in a thread. Spiders or crawlers have a pretty good chance of havesting it then.

Your email address is not within public view when set in the user control panel. If someone wants to email you, it is done through the forum interface. Unless there is some static area on this forum that displays everyone's email address, it's quite safe.
