Why is Kerry running on a 30 year old war record?
I mean, really. His experience is irrelevant today.

Because of the whole Bush going AWOL and leading the country into a war. (As he wraps himself in the American flag)...
I don't know, just my random speculating...

Can you imagine what would have happened to Kerry if he didn't turn around and pick up the guy that fell out of his boat? He was the skipper. If he would have come back to base and said "he fell out while were being shot at, and we split", he would have been court martialed and sent to Leavenworth!
Plus his purple hearts are coming back to haunt him. Apparently he lacks documentation or witnesses. "Fingernail scratch" is the favored term being bandied about.

Personally, i think the reason he's attempting to run on that platform is to try to take some steam from Bush as a war leader, and paint himself as tough. I don't know of a single person aside from a hardcore lefty that would vote for him anyway who is falling for it. His record since he's been an elected official as it pertains to the military and intelligence is atrocious, and speaks more to who he is today than getting a purple heart for being wounded in a war he was forced to fight.
I think it's a mistake, but i suppose some may fall for it. Personally, i think it will turn more people off to him than on.
Oh, and the other reason - he really has very little else. I think it's a diversionary tactic to keep him from getting cornered on the real issues. Nobody can really controvert him as a "war hero" and if they try they will seem petty. But every time he opens his mouth on the real issues, what comes out of it depends wholly on who he's talking to, and he gets himself in trouble.

| Ah, so now he didn't really deserve the purple hearts. I see. Makes sense!
Our old friend tact strikes again! ... Not.

Wonder if it's true? I've heard he got 3 purple hearts, (what was required to get out in 6 Months) none required a hospital stay and no record of medical attention. I'll see if I can find the other link.
Oasn- Just because some guy was in the military doesn't automaticly make him a hero. I've met a lot of x-military and some are just doofusus's. I mean somebody has to clean the toilets and peel tators. This is not in any way to say I do not admire their service. But in a "draft" time you take a 1,000 guy's out of the population and you know as well as I some of them are going to be less than great. I have a lot of friend's that served in vietnam most are regular guy's, a couple are just plain dumba$$'s, as would be a certain % of any group.
BTW I have a brother who is a LT Cmdr in the US Navy.
My other brother served 7 years in US Army, a nephew who is a pvt 1st class in 101st airborne, a niece who is a airman in the AF. My father in law served in Korea and still won't eat anything with rice in ingredients. All my uncle's on my fathers side served in WW2and/or Korea.
Just so you know I support the military 100%.

What else is he going to run on? Voting against the B-2? Voting to raise taxes?

| Boston Globe has an interesting article on the subject. Quote:
"He had a little scratch on his forearm, and he was holding a piece of shrapnel," recalled Kerry's commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Grant Hibbard. "People in the office were saying, `I don't think we got any fire,' and there is a guy holding a little piece of shrapnel in his palm." Hibbard said he couldn't be certain whether Kerry actually came under fire on Dec. 2, 1968, the date in questionand that is why he said he asked Kerry questions about the matter.
But Kerry persisted and, to his own "chagrin," Hibbard said, he dropped the matter. "I do remember some questions, some correspondence about it," Hibbard said. "I finally said, `OK, if that's what happened . . . do whatever you want.' After that, I don't know what happened. Obviously, he got it, I don't know how."
