That link didn't work for me, here's the story:

LONDON (Reuters) - A woman in Mexico gave birth to a healthy baby boy after performing a Caesarian section on herself with a kitchen knife, doctors said Tuesday.

The unidentified 40-year-old woman, who lived in a rural area without electricity, running water or sanitation and was an eight-hour drive from the nearest hospital, performed the operation when she could not deliver the baby naturally.

She had lost a previous baby due to labor complications.

"She took three small glasses of hard liquor and, using a kitchen knife, sliced her abdomen in three attempts ... and delivered a male infant that breathed immediately and cried," said Dr R.F. Valle, of the Dr. Manuel Velasco Suarez Hospital in San Pablo, Mexico.

Valle recounted the event in a report in the International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics.

Before losing consciousness, the woman told one of her children to call a local nurse for help. After the nurse stitched the wound with a sewing needle and cotton thread, the mother and baby were transferred and treated by Valle and his colleagues at the nearest hospital.

I really hope she brings this up any time her son doesn't want to listen to her.

"You had BETTER do what I tell you. Need I remind you again that I sliced open my own abdomen to keep you from dying?! Ingrate!"

And we go through all these complicated procedures to prevent infections and stuff - and she uses an unsterile knife in her own kitchen!

I hope they gave her some antibiotics at the hospital, though.

She must have been pretty desparate - and lucky not to slice the baby as well as herself...

Cheers
Mick

Well, people in rural places, no running water or any of that jazz, have much stronger immune systems than us domesticated folk. Still amazing, though.

At least one of the stories mentioned that her husband (and possible she as well) had delivered several calves by emergency caesarian. So she had a pretty good idea of what she was doing. But still -- I'd want more than a couple of stiff drinks before cutting my abdomen open with a kitchen knife...
