Keep your text messenging on your cell phone
Yeah, it probably sounds like something you can do with your cell phone, but it isn't. Sorry if I shattered any hopes or dreams.
Truth of the matter is that I can't understand how someone can use the 'cell phone shorthand' when they have a full keyboard in front of them. It's like that commercial where the family says every other word to save time on their cell bill and talk like that face to face. Drives me nuts.
I can see doing a little bit of cutting words down to shorter versions once you've said them once or twice in a large post, but for crying out loud, it takes more effort to figure out how to shorten the word than to actually just type it out.
Or am I the only one that is bothered by this? I mean, I pride myself on being an above average speller and having somewhat decent grammar. Seems to me that I have to crack the code to read some of the posts on the message boards I frequent. I've actually gotten into the habit of posting the "full version" of the post so that everyone else doesn't have to strain any more brain cells than necessary.
Besides that, the language is too rich to cheapen by saying "K latr"
You've got 101 keys, use more than 8 of them!

yes it is rather annoying, and difficult to read
Some kids would argue that once you get used to it you're ok..
I say learn how to type
Part of the issue is, its "cool" to talk 7331 or shorthand, I will use 'lol' or 'brb' but to say latr vs. later.. ONE letter gained! lol
as opposed to "lol" which is laugh out loud 9 letters gained
UR ALL SO KUL

Red, you're not the only one it bothers. I agree completely. I've seen some posts that were so aggravating to read with so much abbreviating in them that I just didn't bother finishing. I'm a lousy typist but I use very few abbreviations! As for spelling, I believe I do very well - but there's a dictionary on my desk just in case, and I proofread every post before submitting it!

Haha, ya, I type with correct (as correct as I can) grammar and punctuation when I instant message folks. "LOL" is the most irritating thing on the face of the planet.
OMG!!WTF!!LOL!!!1111

I don't mind the LOL's and such as they are more of an expression that can't really be done in full text without losing the effect ( like explaining a joke ).
It's the ppl's and u and r's that drive me insane. When I see posts like that, I summarily stamp that person as lazy and/or English language challenged. I'd rather see misspelled words than outright doodling. At least if someone misspells a word, they are trying. And sometimes the online dictionary can't translate what you wrote into a "did you mean X?" because it is so horribly misspelled.
I find forums like this to be like conversation. If you tell your buddy cya later, then use it. I highly doubt anyone tells their friend on the phone " gotta go man, I'll T-T-Y-L"
