Toyota Tune up how much?

Can anyone give me an approx cost for a 1996 Camry tune up? a major tune up at 60,000 miles? does around $800 sound right? I know it has to do with what needs to be done but is there an approx.amount

Thanks

My guess is that $800 is too high, unless there's additional work detected or already known. My guess is half that.

300$ i would think would be a good price minus the timing belt

Since when do Toyotas need tune ups?

Gave my Toy truck it's very first tune-up at 115,000 miles. It wasn't even running poorly, I just thought it was about time.

AFAIC there is no way in Hades a tune-up should cost $800. Maybe for a Ferrari or something. If you're paying more than $250 (give or take $50) for a major tune-up with no other misc. problems that are being fixed then you may be getting ripped off. I'd ask to see an explicit breakdown of those charges with an explaination for each one. No way it should be $800. Hell, you can get a new engine $1200.

Drop by Discount Auto or AutoZone. You can pick up four cylinder engines starting under $1000 after core block exchange. Such an engine will not come with all the external bolt-on parts or electronics, but you can carry those over easily enough.

I don't think there is much to tune up now a days.

Electronic ignition- not really adjustable, just change the plugs.
Fuel injection- maybe a fuel filter, and air cleaner.

Valve adjustment, maybe.
Oil change.

Too many tune ups have: "check this, check that, inspect this, inspect that". In English, Yup motor's there. Un huh fan is turning. Radiator has water, tires have air, yada yada...

I'd buy the engine!

I probably shouldn't have said new, I'll give ya that. But remanufactured, sure thing.
On this list there seems to be many for under $1200. This list as well. Plus here's some nice prices on used engines...some for as low as $400 (oh yeah, that's at your link btw. )

Thanks all for your input. The price includeds a IAC valve which I priced around and it goes for about $350. So i guess I'm not being ripped off. Which is good i think

Is your IAC bad? If it is bad or not working properly you will notice either a LARGE (almost dying) decrease in engine RPM's while coming to a stop or a VERY high idle. You should also have a code setting for this to be found. Also even if your IAC is bad your basic tune up :

Plugs (Compression test on each cylinder included)
Wires (if needed, most times are not)
Fuel Filter
Air Filter (if needed)
Check fluids, belts, hoses (if it has a serpentine belt it may need replaced)

Other than that the IAC shouldn't be a "TUNE UP" part. It is either BAD (which your car would run like junk) or it's not.

IMO- Get a second Opinion

ASE Certified since 1995 "Engine Performance" first test taken.
