DC and NYC Hotels

One of my all-time favorite bands, the Strawbs, is re-uniting after 25 years for a short U.S. East Coast this summer. Since I'm on the Left Coast, and of course they're not coming anywhere near here, I thought I'd take some vacation to catch the Birchmere Tavern show in Alexandria, and then a Joe's Tavern show in NYC.

Now, being a Left-Coast kinda guy, I have no idea where we should stay. We'll have a few days in Washington D.C. and a few days in New York City to do as many tourist things as we feel like fitting in. I think 3-4 star places will be in budget. Suggestions from our learned community?

Oh . . . I thought we'd fly to DC, then Amtrak to NYC.

Yeee, THE STRAWBS!!

I like to pretend that I know where to stay in any city. I tell 'em "The Fairmont. They make your beds and leave chocolate. They always have a jazz combo in the bar, and the bartender will sell you unfiltered Camels. A man's hotel! Costs plenty, but it's great!"

My tastes always run to the Taft Hotel (every city has one) the rooms smell like old sweat and tobacco, and as long as there's no fleas, fine by me. It won't have a bar, but the diner connected to the bowling alley can fit you up with a Filet O' Tuburculosis and a fairly decent cuppa coffee.

Hey, I'm just here to help.

Tnx, Knot! I knew I could count on you. "Cabbie, the Fairmont, and make it snappy! There's an extra sawbuck in it for you if we're there in 15 minutes."

No, better not try that. Last time we had a shall we say, "assertive" driver, my wife yelled "stop right here" and we had to get off and find another one. That was right by Union Square in San Francisco.

Perhaps we'll walk!

I'd be all over The Four Seasons if I was to stay in a 4 or 5 star hotel

About 10-15min drive to Alexandria, VA...for me anyway, since I know exactly how to get there...make sure you have good directions....either that, or there is a Sheraton right in Alexandria....Old Town Alexandria surely has a bunch of high priced, great service hotels.

I'm a big fan of just using Priceline and choosing a four star hotel in a certain sector of the city. That is, if you don't mind doing it the entertaining way.

Now, if you use my method and get shafted, I apologize.

Haven't you ever seen Home Alone 2: Lost In New York?

This should be a no brainer.

The answer to your question is, it depends. It one, depends upon how much money you want to spend. The other is where in NYC you want to stay; downtown, midtown, uptown.

There is a Mariott right at Time Sq. that will never disappoint. For old world charm, the Plaza (59th/5th) and the Waldorf are the best.

For something trendy, try the Hudson Hotel.

Also at Time Sq. is the Doubletree. I also was at the "W" Hotel on Lexington in the 40's.
