William Safire on the Pledge of Allegiance case

Quote:
The only thing this time-wasting pest Newdow has going for him is that he's right. Those of us who believe in God don't need to inject our faith into a patriotic affirmation and coerce all schoolchildren into going along. The key word in the pledge is the last one.
-- from his column yesterday.

why dont they just add a word: "founded" one nation, founded under God, etc..... because that was one of the basis of our founding fathers... you cant change history. so if under God isnt correct now, instead of getting rid of it, make it correct

and as a side note, i hate all "political correctness". all those people can lick my............

What they really mean when they interperet "liberty and justice for all" is "liberty and justice for me." Most groups do that going against the grain of the "evil opressive" majority. Which is of course an affront to the very basic idea of democracy.

I think what people MUST understand is that with freedoms come concessions. We are not free from being offended. We are free to choose to get over ourselves.

By removing the rights of the majority, you do nothing to further the cause of freedom.

I imagine if the guy who wrote the Pledge wanted God in it, he would have put it there himself.

I imagine if the vast majority of people would rather have it there, it should stay.

I imagine that you are not familiar with the U.S. Constitution and the idea that majorities cannot tyrannize minorities.

How is having the word "God" in the pledge of allegiance in any way tyrannical?????

Does it not seem more tyrannical that the few strip away the rights of the many?

I am a vegetarian and the fact that all of you eat meat offends me. And even though I am not forced to do it or believe in it, you should stop doing it.

They don't make you eat meat every morning before class... nor are you required to be the only one not eating when all your classmates are treated to hamburgers. Kids would look at you funny... maybe whisper... their parents could tell them bad things about kids who don't eat hamburgers.

The rights of the majority almost never need protecting.
